MG MGA - Crossflow fitting/filters
I'm soon to be fitting a Sean Brown ported crossflow with dual webers on my A. It has the 1800 3 main. What I'd like to find out is what are the largest K&N filters that someone has used. I'm hoping to avoid buying some large ones and then having to return them because of clearance problems. Rolling road scheduled beginning march with David at APT. Will post the numbers when I have them. Thanks for any help See you at buttonwillow in may ! Tom |

| Tom, I just got some K&N's from Dave at APT for a standard head so I can't help you with your filter question -- but I am sure looking forward to heading up from Orange County to Buttonwillow in May. See you then! Steve |

| I see no one has commented Tom, but I will try to help. I have the standard head on my 1600 but I have fitted a single sidedraft (45DCOE). Using the shortest siamesed manifold I could find the carb just cleared the inner wing with little space for a filter. I managed with great difficulty to fabricate a cold air box wedged to the back of the carb and mounted a K&N above the carb. I suspect with the crossflow head that the carbs will mount nearer the engine and will thus have a bit more clearance to the inner wing. The problem though will be that as you move forward on the engine the inner wing encroaches more into the engine bay. I would be surprised if the bodywork would not require modifying to fit the carbs let alone any filters. |

Bob and Renou, Thanks and Merci, The head I will fit has the intakes and carbs on the opposite side of the engine from the exhaust. I have seen them fit (on ebay etc) but I know it's not a common conversion. Hopefully someone with one will post. If not I can get them from APT when I go for rolling road tuning. I just won't drive through any sandstorms on the way! Steve, Our club stays at the days inn when we go. If you know how to link the event to this board I'm sure lots of people would be interested. Last year we did the "noon hour track time" between races. It was great. They also had a solo sprint/slalom setup you could do. The races and pits were great, great vendor displays, awards for cars etc. This time though we'll bring earplugs for when the karaoke starts up. 50th year MGA celebration too this year, should be another great event! See you there ! Tom |

| Thanks Tom, What club are you in? Contact info? Since my car should be done soon I've been thinking about getting involved in one, as time permits. Is the 50th aniversary celebration a seperate event or are you anticipating its observance at the British extravaganza at Buttonwillow? Is the Days Inn near the track, I'll be needing a room anyway, and should probably make a reservation somewhere ASAP Good luck with your filters, it seems you would have more room with a crossflow. Dave recommeded a rolling road tune with some guy he uses or recommends who has a moble unit. He mentenoed its cheaper if more than one car is done at the same time. My car should be at that stage in a few weeks. Steve |

Steve, Pretty far away from Huntington beach. If you go to Namgar click interesting links then scroll down to "MG car enthusiasts list of british car clubs in the usa" , click on C for California and you're sure to find one quite a bit closer to you. Our club is vvbcc.homestead.com I talked to Kelvin at moss and the info won't be out for a few weeks anyway but the short of it is so: 35$ per person gets entry on both Sat and sunday. Both luchtime track drives, the barbecue dinner, single car speed event. The fiftieth anniversary of the MGA will be celebrated too. An appearance was mentioned from John Sprintzle (?) a former MGA racer/campaigner. There will be much more like always. The pics from last year can be seen @www.britishmotoring.net then click the link for british extravaganza gallery Hotel numbers in the area can be found by connecting to the track @ www. buttonwillowraceway.com and then clicking the hotel link. They are sure to fill up fast. If you want the # to the Days inn the club stays at it's 661-797-2371. The tracks less then 10 minutes by car, there's a few restaraunts there and it's pretty cheap. I think on the order of 40-50$ for a room. There are also campsites on the raceway if you want. I have a tentative window for rolling road tuning mid march. If you'd like to do it then also to save money you can email offline. Likewise anyone else who wants a rolling road dyno tune. It will be at the APT shop in riverside california in mid march. David from APT has been a great help in all things MGA related and he has great performance parts along with straight talk about what works or doesn't-even if he doesn't make money from it. He will be at buttonwillow this year again I think. And having reread all this I realize I should state I have no interest in any of the above commercial entities. Tom |
