MG MGA - Crown wheel and pinion
I have a 5.125:1 CWP which I believe is for a Sprite/midget/Morris Minor. This ratio would be great for sprints and hill climbs. Does anyone know if I can fit it to my MGA axle? |

Geoff, I've never tried, but I think the centre cage is larger on MGA/B. I'd ring someone like Moss who sells new 4.3 and 3.9 C/W's and ask what the internal diameter is and compare it to your 5.125 The highest ratio I've seen is 4.8 and I've used them for hill climbs... You don't get far is 1st gear though. Have you calculated the maximum speed your looking for and then worked back to the diff ratio you think your require ? There's a gear ratio spreadsheet on the twin cam site I can send you. Cheers <MARK> |

The answer is NO! The A series and B series diffs were completely different. If you want a 5.12 diff for the MG you'll have to find an Austin A55 wagon. I have used one in my race cars and while top end is about 95 mph, you attain that speed right quickly. |

Geoff - The answer is maybe! I am from the TD/TF board. The 5.125 was the standard ratio for the TD and here in the US a common change to the TD rear axel is to fit MGA 4.3 CWP to increase road speed so I would think it would be possaible if your gears came from a TD. One problem that you may have is the pinion bearings as the shafts are different diameters. You may also need the TD drive flange. Jan |
