MG MGA - Cylinder head geometry
In looking at what I have (1622 block with "15" head) I made a lot of measurements and constructed a plan of the bores and valves. It seems that the edges of the exhaust valves come outside of the bores by about .078". They do not crash the block b/c there is room in the head with the normal valve lift. Just an interesting observation. With a "16" head, the overlap increases to about 0.11". It seems that clearance pockets in the block are only required if fitting a shallow type B head, or if the head has been seriously skimmed. |

Correct, or if a higher lift cam is used most, engine builders want about a minimum of .060" clearance from valve to block. |
