MG MGA - Disc Knockoffs
I was looking through Clausagers recently and noticed a number of car with what appeared to be standard disc wheels but with the eared knockoffs holding them on. How common were these? I've never seen a car with them, an easy solution if one ever wants conver from wire wheels to disc wheels. |

Not common at all. Only fitted to 2111 Twin Cams and a few hundred so-called "de Luxe" MGAs. Next to impossible to find the wheels, and a different fitting method to the typical wire wheels (pin vs splines) so you can't interchange them. |

These folks are preparing to produce a run of new Twin-Cam wheels, http://www.sportscarspares.co.uk/index.html but then you still have to find the appropriate hubs and other special bits. They didn't use a conventional splined hub as with wire wheels, but used A Dunlop Peg Drive racing hub system. You would be looking at thousands to do the conversion. An alloy version of the wheels is made by Realm engineering in the UK, http://www.realmengineering.com/ but again you run into the problrms of hubs and the cost Cheers, Rich |

I once saw a set of Mga steel wheels (on Ebay) where the gentleman had the centers cut out and wire wheel hubs welded in to the center. They look a little strange and I do not know how they would work or run but the idea was interesting. Imagine...knock-off steel wheels. Don't know if he ever sold them or not. |

Years ago there was an aftermarket accessory kit available to install a dummy hub extention and knockoff for four wheels on a disc wheel car. At first glance this had the appearance of knockoff steel wheels, but was nothing more than a appearance accessory. Anyone who knows what these wheels look like would immediately spot the stock steel wheels not being Twin Cam or Deluxe parts. |

Or do what this guy did. Anyone know any details of how he achieved this look? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110044361647&indexURL=8&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting |

The entry mentions that those are TR6 wheels with spinners |
J Delk |
Yes, I know. But I'm more interested in the details of how he attached the spinners to the rims. Bolting on a set of TR6 rims is no secret. |
Derek Nicholson |
I noticed that in his ad as well. Were TR6 steel wheels available in splined knock off format? I would seriously consider a set of those for my ZA. I would love to convert the car to Twin-cam hubs and wheels but I am afraid that my lottery win did not come through.....Again! :-( Rich |

No, as far as I know, and that puts me 99.9% sure, the TR6 was available with bolt-on steel rims or splined wire wheels. The difference is that the Triumph has bolt-on splined hub, making it easier to convert from one to the other. But there were no steel wheels with splines. To see what I'm referring to, see item #70 on:- http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=32797&SortOrder=45 |

Since sending messages don't cost anything, I've sent a message to the seller asking if he can give me more details of the wheels. Of course I've no idea if he'll take the time to answer, but "If you don't ask, you don't get."! I'll let you know if I get an answer. Hopefully with picture(s). |

I found these a while back for an E-type, should work fine on an MGA if you don't mind dropping $2000. http://www.sngbarratt.com/catalogue/accessories/show.asp?id=13243&assemblyid=200&pagepos=24&back=y&next=y&senderid=1 |

They DO look good. The hole layour isn't right for a Twin-Cam look though. I'm sure that Sports Car Spares or Realm could do up a set of their Twin-Cam wheels using splined hubs, but that would cost at least as much. Pity. Rich |

Has anyone contacted Sports Car Spares and priced their wheels? I would like to know, but I didn't think it fair if we all blasted them with emails. Gary |

Here is the text of an E-mail I got from Sports Car Spares with their pricing. Currently, our production run is not now due to start until January 2007. This is mainly due to the manufacturer relocating, causing manufacturing delays for all the 'smaller' customers (such as ourselves). We are looking at having a fair number (50 sets or so) made up for Q1 2007. These wheels will be 5 & 6J rimmed items. In the meantime, we are working in conjunction with Peter Wood on the supply of his own Alloy replica wheels. If you are a member of the Yahoo! TwinCam group, you would have seen the details on these, which are not currently on the website; to reiterate, the specifics are: - 4, 5 & 6J rims to be produced - Current manufacturing run is for 5J rims - Pricing is as follows: single wheels £333 four or five wheels £292 each plus VAT if applicable and of course shipping charge. - Wheels are being painted, ready in approx. 4 weeks - 50 made, 6 sets have already been reserved - Pictures will be on the website within the week. These can be shipped world-wide, shipping costs TBC. We do offer a discount if paying by cash / bank transfer on any of our products. If you are interested in the alloy wheels, then let me know. With regards to the steel wheels, these are still very much happening - if a little delayed. I can add you to the interested list if you wish, and send out an email nearer the time with more specific information? Kins regards, Tom Strange Sports Car Spares |

For anyone that doesn't mind flared fenders, I know a guy in Britain who will sell a set of 7 x 15 magnesium Campagnolo knock-off wheels from a Lamborghini for 1250 pounds plus shipping. Wheels look like this: http://www.rhodo.citymax.com/i/non-rhodo/islerowheel.jpg |
