MG MGA - Distributor cap off 90 degrees.
I carefully out new wires on my new distributor cap maing sure to keep the positions the same as the old cap. Only when I was ready to put the cap on did I realize that the new cap has the wires coming out ivertical when installed, the old one had them pointing to the rear. Do I only need to change the wires one position on the cap? Tahnks Russell

Hi Russell. You can change the wires to suit the firing order, or you could leave the wires, and rotate the distributor drive gear 180 degrees. Either method should get the engine running. I am wondering if your new distributor cap is identical to the old one. I know that there are several caps that are ALMOST identical to the MGA ones, but that have subtle differences. Some caps have the alignment tabs that key the cap to the distributor body, in different locations. Perhaps your old distributor cap was incorrect? Good luck anyway! Glenn

It's an Austin Healey 3000 distrib cap. They fit our distributors but are in fact 90 degrees different. I needed one to route the wires of my Twin Cam...but that's another story. Russell, I'd just move the wires. Firing order 1,3,4,2 counter clockwise. Just remove the cap, look at the rotor and align wires accordingly. hth

Mike!! That's why my car runs rough!! I stand corrected. Come to think of it it might have been a Triumph or 100-4 part. Thanks. Paul
