MG MGA - Distributor Mystery
I just tried to install a new set of points and a rotor I ordered from Moss. They are slightly different (larger) than ones I was trying to replace and they don't fit. I can only gather than I am not working with a proper MGA distributor. Now my problem is how do I know what points, etc. to order? Is it possible the car has an MGB distributor? I assume there must be an obvious or at least a common swap you experienced guys know about. Any tips you can give me to identify it would be helpful. Thanks |

Jeff. The standard MGA distributor was the Lucas DM2 while the MGB used the Lucas 25D4 and, later, the Lucas 45D4 distributors. All are points type distributors and all will physically interchange with each other when used with the B series engines. I believe the DM2 is so marked on the "arm" of the distributor body into which the vacuum advance unit is fitted. (I do not have a copy of the DM2 immediately to hand.) I know that the Lucas 25D4 has "25D" cast into the arm where the vacuum advance unit fits. You will have to pull the distributor to install the points. If you can take and post a photograph, it is relatively easy to determine which model distributor it is. Les |

Perfect. That's exactly what I need. Thank you! |

I am attempting to load a photo showing the portion of the body of the 25D distributor showing the markings.

This shows the same area on the later model Lucas DM2 distributor. The DM2 marking is not present on the "information boss" on the sample in my collection, off a 61 MGA 1600. Les |

I have a 1962 MGA w/ the 1622 engine and the distributor in the car is the DM2. Was the distributor the same for all of the MGA engines or did they use a different one for the 1622 engine (ie; 25D4). Unfortunatley the origional owner of the car passed away so I have no way of knowing from him if this was the origional distributor. I have tried to find some info on this with little success. I did find a sight that elluded to a different distributor for the 1622 but did not specify the model #. Would any of you know if there is a different distributor and ,if so, what the model # would be. Thanks |
