MG MGA - Docs on SU carb rebuilding
I just received my rebushed SU's for my '59 MGA and a complete rebuild kit from Joe Curto. Now I am ready to do the rebuild that I have never done before. Is there a good reference outside of the normal MGA manual? Thanks, Jim

Jim, I also like the book shown at: http://www.amazon.com Search for: SU Carburetters Use that spelling exactly. Mick

Jim, Search in the archives. I remember downloading a good book on rebuilding SU's last year. Unfortunately I could not find the book. Dan

Dan, Were you thinking of this site? http://www.tr-register.com.au/Files/technical.htm Good information on tuning, but a bit short on assembly. Mick

When I rebuilt my carbs several years ago I had them professionally rebushed and I got a video from Moss - I think. It is very good taking you through all the steps for putting in a carb kit. The photos were clear and the explanation was precise.

Jim - Go to Burlen Fuel's web site at: http://www.burlen.co.uk/ You can order their Workshop Manual for SU carburetors. Why Burlen Fuel? They make the SU carburetors and fuel pumps. Good luck - Dave

Thanks for the info. I'll get the Haynes, refer to the technical info on the web and get started. Cheers, Jim

Work in a clean area. Be very methodical and organize the parts as you remove them (the pockets in an egg carton is a a good way to keep small parts organized.) Making drawings to show the order of assembly helps. Especially for the carburettor linkage. A gallon can of parts cleaner with a basket to hold the parts while immersed in the cleaner is essential and a small brush to clean off varnish. Use air pressure to dry off parts. Be certain not to reverse the butterfly plates as the edge is beveled to fit only one way. Make certain the head of the needles fit flush against the face of the piston. Use a dial caliper to measure how deep the jet is adjusted into the carb body (I believe .070" is the starting point.) Take time to marvel on how simple and brilliant the SU is designed. Make certain your rebuild kit is S.U. manufactured. -M.S.

Moss has a SU Carb Rebuild Video, it is a lot of help for the first timer. #211-035 $39.95. Best of Luck

I got the video also. It made it very easy. I rebuilt mine and put them back on. It started right up. Do only one carb at a time. Do get the one gallon carb cleaner from the part store. Paul

I agree about the video. Well worth the money. Covers tuning as well.

They are really very simple. Take your time and enjoy yourself. If you have ever rebuilt a Holley or Carter 4 barrel, you will discover an SU is very basic and simple but yet extremely functional. Have fun.

Jim, When are you planning on doing this? I might be able to help out a little. I've never done H4s, but I've done several sets of HS4s and HIFs.... Send me an email (deleting the obvious, of course.) Cheers! Rob

Author: G.R.Wade 4th Edition revised & enlarged Feb 1981 ISBN 0-85113-113-1 Publisher: Speedsport Motorbooks With this info maybe you could find one thru a book search. Elsewise I could scan the pertinent pges and email them to you. Greg & Grimm |
