MG MGA - dynamo
i putting back together my dynamo when i put the fan on this goes over the key and sits free there.so when the dynamo is turning the fan sits still.should there an extra spacer between the dynamo house and the fan.I got on spacer over the shaft but this comes no furture then the dynamo house so there is about 10 mm space between the house and the key, thats were the fan becomes to sit when i putting everything together http://users.pandora.be/mga_world/ |

The basic generator is common across many British cars (and some ford tractors from what I read) What differs mostly is the fan, the pulley and the spacer. In one gen I had, the front end plate was a different thickness and interferred with the fan when reassembled in MGA form. It is possible that your generator is using the spacer from one version and the fan or pulley from another. Properly installed the sheet metal fan is clamped between the pulley and the spacer, behind the key as the not is tightened. The key prevents the pulley from rotating on the shaft, not the fan. There is little force required to keep the fan from shifting. Chuck |

There is a spacer about the size or a wedding using wedding cars sevenoaks ring that goes on the shaft first. The fan is next. Then the pully that is driven by a key. the a lock washer and nut. The pully doesn't spin on the shaft because of the key. The fan in pinched between the pully and the spacer, friction keeps it moving with the pully. |

Yep. That is pretty much it. The primary reason for the notch in the fan is to get past the key without having to remove it. Chuck |

Serge; I had this very same problem when due to time and work had to send my Generator to an auto electrician few days later there was a very unusual noise coming from under the bonnet. Finally tracked it down to the fan spinning on its own whenever the engine was started or sudden acceleration. I could see no reason for it to happen all of a sudden and wondered if it had anything to do with the spacer being pushed further down into the front plate and subsequently not taking up the gap. Quick and easy fix was to simply put a large OD washer with correct ID between the fan and the pulley, making sure that the pully went all the way to the end of the Woodruff Key. Now no noise or independantly spinning fan. Have to love those sudden strange noises starting from under the bonnet. One thing of note is that a PO had changed the pulley from the original to a smaller diameter one still the same size belt used. Just so long as she is there for me to drive Im happy. Can look out my work window and see her parked amongst all the family sedans, nice sight on a sunny day or any day. |
