MG MGA - El Kameleon& other audio setups
The El Kameleon is a JVC radio that offers a unique function. It somehow automatically varies the volume according to speed. Now really that can't be done on such a vintage car as the MGA, can it? Well, it works for me. The MGA's design makes it difficult to hear a radio. When at speed, the volume has to be high enough to overcome the wind noise, But when you pull into town, that volume level will blow you away. The ElKameleon (and other JVC radios) does this seamlessly with a feature they call Audio Cruise. I believe it measures the noise level on the B+ line and works it's magic measuring the engine speed from that noise. Not really sure though. Tommy, I don't know what to say. Do you possibly have extra capacitors on your car to filter out the noise on the B+ line to the radio? It is difficult to hear an actual change in audio level. I do know if I turn my Audio Cruise setting off, I get blown away at stop signs. I leave mine set at "2" and find it works e=well for me. Sorry I may have given you a bum steer. Tyson, you can see my setup at : http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/c-schaefer@sbcglobal.net/album?.dir=/2786re2&.src=ph&.tok=phwDuoFBl0IZ8OBm The basic radio is a black panel with no knobs It is not too obtrusive when off. Wish I had a better way to hide it from general view. Other more important things to work on I guess. I built a box that sits on the tunnel and holds Left and Right speakers vertically, pointed towards the driver and passenger. It shoots the sound right at the occupants similar to the original dash mounted speaker It acts more like a Hi-FI rather than stereo though with no speaker separation, but the high frequency notes do not get deflected and lost. I gotta get one of these....didn't realize this was available as an "after market" feature. My buddy has this feature on his 96 Miata (sorry) and it is great. Of course, he also has speakers in the head rests. Of course, in the coupe, mounting speakers in the rear package shelf is almost the same! Thanks for the heads up. GTF |

Sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately, all of my generator's amps are already spoken for. I wonder if you could see the lights dim in time with the bass drum? I know kids that would spend big money for this mod while we get it for free. Bill |
