MG MGA - Eng. Replacement - will it fit?
I recently installed a Moss supercharger on a 1960 MGA, and added 5 speed (T9) at the same time. The car was a marvel to drive. Unfortunately, #4 piston let go (old engine under more stress)and it is time for a rebuild/replacement. I am considering a 3 main B 1800 engine, but it appears that the water pump and crank pulleys are extended on the 1800, and will not match up with the supercharger pulleys. Does anyone have experience with putting a Moss supercharger on an MG 1800 3 main engine? |

Jack I would call Moss and talk to them about what is necessary. Or contact KJ Dodd, California, USA, doddk@mossmotors.com who posts on these BBS fairly regularly. HTH Larry |

I do not have experience doing the conversion that you are talking about with the super charger, I have however had some experience with an A with the early B engine and the T-9. What a dream machine this is. The only thing that I would do is to install the B breaks on it. It is one thing to go fast, but to be able to stop is a good thing too. At the same time as adding the super charger, replace the back of the generator with that of one from an early ford tractor. As it turns out, the generators are the same, except that the Lucus generator used on the ford tractors used a ball bearing instead of the bushing used on the MG generator. This is an important change due to the loads put on the generator because of the belt from the super charger. |

Jack, I left you a note in the supercharger section where i first saw this thread. -BMC. |

JP Jim, Would you happen to hava a picture of the ball bearing rear plate for the generator? |

Barney, The factory competition MGA pushrod engines used ball bearing generators. I think the only production use of these was on a Lotus but I don't recall which model at the moment. I'm unaware of a Lucas number for the Ford tractor, unless it was used after the 60s and is not in the Lucas master catalog. I have photos and part numbers of the disassembled ball bearing generator used on the Sebring engine if you are interested. Frank |

Barney, I will send you a picture of the one installed on this motor. Didn't take pictures specifically of it though, but you'll get the idea. -BMC. |

These dynamos are off Mid 1960's Ford Tractors. Something like model 3000-4000-5000 I believe. We used the entire unit. it is slightly different as shown in the pics sent to Barney and Jack but it was our way of keeping the car closer in appearance while modifying it instead of installing a alternator. Alternators are a cool modern item that are overrated in terms of install on older cars- if you don't use any more power then originally was used, then i see no reason to run one except for tip top race performance or running your subwoofer. -BMC. |

I have the picture of the ball bearing tail generator, thanks to Brian McCullough. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/dc201.htm Frank, Yes, I would like the pictures and part numbers of the disassembled unit. |

Anyone know where to find one of these backplates? The backplate on my B just cracked and wil need replacement, and I've been considering a supercharger kit so this would be perfect! I don't really want to install an alternator. |
