MG MGA - Engine change
Hi all mga fans probably more to the UK enthusiasts
I have changed the engine in my 1956 A from 1500 to the 1622 B seires The 1500 was a Riley unit and the new engine is also a Riley B series engine from what I can find out from the paperwork of the car started life with a 1500cc changed in the 70's for a 1622 when I bought it the motor was back to a 1500 But what I need to know is what do the DVLA need to know apart from cc and engine number I have looked on there website and there is a list of options and the one that I think I fall into is "an inspection report provided for insurance purposes" How or where do I get one of these reports?? Thanks in advance Ian Mc |

Hi Ian Usually a garage, they need to give you a note that the engine number and capacity is what you say. Needless to say it must be a bona fide garage and on headed notepaper. A garage that understands old cars would be best. A receipt for the new engine would also help. Hope this helps. Barry |

Ian, I think all you need to do with the DVLA is to record a change of engine cc and engine No. You may be able to do this by marking up a section of your existing V5 and sending it to the DVLA. Regards Colin |

As suggested by Colin, that's what I've done in the past. Plus, no problem staying 'Historic' as it's a larger engine in the same engine range fitted to that model. Inspections are for where you're doing something radical, like dropping a V8 into a Ford Anglia. Before you send the form back, I'd suggest getting a photocopy/scan of it, as I think they're a bit bows under at DVLA, and all that goes with that. |

Yes, as said by others.
When I changed my 1500 for an 1800 many years ago the DVLA wanted to know the engine number, which I didn't have as I got it from a scrap yard and it had been removed. I took a month or so 'obtaining' a number from someone who had a wrecked engine. I duly got a letter from a suitable MoT garage and sent the paper work off to DVLA. It transpired they had changed the rules by then, sending me back the paperwork, saying they weren't interested anymore. Just the record of engine size in the V5 was sufficient. Steve |

Similar to Steve. In 2016 I took my car off SORN and advised that the engine was now 1800. No further question from DVLA. |

Hi all thanks for the replies I have been to local garage had them print on headed paper the engine Number and size, will let you all know what happens Thanks Ian Mc |

Not knowing the rules in the UK, can you just switch the aluminum number plate/tab from the old block to the new block. DMV won't know one MG engine from another. |
