MG MGA - Engine cooling

Has anyone tried the fan shroud offered by moss to aid in keeping the engine cooler (#459-645)..... most modern cars have shrouds........
Mike

Mike,

I tried a fan shroud, but the problem for me turned out to be a number of factors. See Barney's site on cooling:

http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/cooling/cool_101.htm

I tried starting a thread on overheating a while back, without much luck. Everyone else is tired of it, and there are many causes. Barney's site of course is a great reference.

The key bits for me were the felt pad and the duct that runs from the front grill back to the carbs for cooling. With those two pieces out of place, hot air was recirculating, which the shroud couldn't help.

This was in a car with a new radiator and a recently boiled block.

With the right radiator cap, correct ducting, and that simple felt pad in place, my car started running cool. In Houston. In the summer. Well, maybe running cool is a bit much, but at least not overheating.

Mike.
I bought one from Moss. In traffic it ran just a bit cooler. It did not make any difference at speed. Then it came time to change the fan belt. I ended up pitching it in the garbage.

Thanks again for the info, I know u must get tired of the same questions, but the good news.... means many more of us must be starting to restore our cars, and I promise I'll pass on all the great tips...I really appreciate all your help, needless to say, I'll just install the radiator correctly and and save the shroud money...thanks,

One other note about the radiator shroud. It increases the fan noise. I couldn't hear the fan before installing the shroud, but after installing the shroud the fan noise was very noticable. It is now hanging on the wall of the garage waiting for a new owner!

I too had overheating issue with a new motor, radiator etc. Ended up builing a new radiator with off set rows (oem radiators are not offset) and what a difference it made. I aslo discovered that the original (new) radiatior I had rebuild still had some blockage. Even rebuild radiators can go wrong.

Come on sunshine!

I agree with all that was said above - mine's hanging up in the garage too now. The price and carriage from the states was horrendous too!

If it's running very hot, something's not right with what you've got.
