MG MGA - Engine/gearbox oil

I have just completed a total rebuild of both the engine and gearbox of an MGA. What are the list contributor's recommendations for oil for both compoments? Do I understand correctly that the gearbox uses the same oil as the engine? I use Castrol 20W50 in my T-Series cars. Will that suffice?

The 20W50 should be fine in both. There are a lot of opinions on oil for the gearbox. I use straight 40 wt in mine, some are using automatic transmission fluid due to the fact that engine oil isn't what it used to be. Additives have been removed to meet emission requirments, ATF has better shear properties which is a plus in a transmission. Dexron II ATF is petrolium based, The new Mercon 5 is a semi synthetic. Redline makes synthetics for this use also.
