MG MGA - Engine I.D.
Need help identifying engine. 1961 MGA Coupe has missing engine no. plate from block. In place of it at the same location is engraved in the block 16 14777. According to research, my engine no. should be 16GA-U-H or 16GA-U with nos. in the range 101-31660. Any thoughts on this? I have not seen any MGA engines with the no. engraved into the block and without prefixes. Is this an MGA engine or similar engine? It is running an 1800 head (presumably from a "B") and the left lower block is engraved 1600. The car no. is GHDL/83732 and the body no. is B8777, which I believe to be correct for the car. Thanks, Eddie |

Could be that the engine was previously cleaned in a caustic solution which dissolved away the aluminium engine plate and the number was engraved at this time. From the chassis number it looks like your car was made very early (Jan/Feb) in 1960 and it is then not inconceivable that the original 1600 engine number could have been 14777. By the way original style engine number plates can be obtained from Todd Clarke.......................Mike |

Hi Eddie, according to my data your engine should be in the range of 16GA-U-14985 to 14990. Hope this helps. Gio |

Hi Eddie, according to my data your engine should be in the range of 16GA-U-14775-to 14780. So the stamped number (14777) could be the original one ! Hope this helps. Gio |

Look at this partial view of the Register. The brown marked rows are Coupés. My first post was related to sequence of general engines. Then I checked for Coupé-engines and found that the previous Coupé had 14775 ! So it may be logical that the next has 14777. Gio |

Thanks for your input and research. It does appear that the original engine to this car had the number 16GA-U 14777. And perhaps my engine is the original one. I will order out a new plate and engrave the number and mount it at its correct location. Thanks again, Eddie |

Check with Clarke Restorations. Todd makes and reverse stamps original looking engine tags. Anyone have a guess on the engine number for Coupe 70011 should be, my tag having been hot tanked off long ago |

My car had what I believe to be the original engine number on the title in place of the chassis number, so I had Todd Clarke make me a new plate with that number. It turned out great... I highly recommend having him make you one rather than trying to do it yourself because otherwise it won't look right. -Del |
