MG MGA - Engine Identification
I guess I should be asking this one on the MGB site, but I will try the fountains of knowledge here first! I have often wondered which version of the 1800 5-bearing engine I have in my car. I bought the engine as a worn out heap of junk at an MG garage closing down auction. It was lying unloved in a corner of the garage and had no rivetted identification plate. There were no ancilleries bolted on the block. During the rebuild I transferred all the MGA external bits across. Are there any external reference numbers on the block or anything else that might give me a clue? The engine is in the car and running so trying to find numbers on camshafts etc is a no no at the moment. My gut feeling is that it is a later 18V of some sort. It will presumably be to a UK standard and I have a feeling that it was a recon (Gold Seal) unit. Steve |

The casting date is on the earlier blocks but I don't know if it is on the later 18v ones. Sometimes the casting number will help pin down the year range. I thought I had something on block casting etc but I can't find it. good luck. |
