Engine earth strap is easiest installed across the left engine mount like this: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/pics2/cable_eng_grd.jpg

All engine mount nuts were originally all-steel self-locking nuts. These look a lot like Nylock nuts or Elastic Stop Nuts with the round crown on top, but having no plastic insert. Instead the top crown has one or two vertical slots. From the vertical slot there is a horizontal slot at the base of the crown extending part way around the perimeter. The resulting finger on top is then deformed slightly to serve as a friction brake against the screw thread.

This type of lock nut can be re-used many times and still locks the thread. It was originally used on all engine mount bolts, bellhousing bolts, generator mount and adjuster bolts, propshaft bolts, rear axle U-bolts, front suspension A-arm assembly and A-arm inner pivot mounting, steering rack mount, and probably more places I can't remember offhand.

I don't know if good reproduction parts are available, but it should be a class winner in a concours show if you could install these in all the right places on your MGA. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of this original type of locknut, as I have not seen one for many years. If anyone has a good close up picture of this part, please send it my way so I can post it on my web site in the concours details section.

Would this be close enough? Golden colored cad plating is probably wrong, but that can be corrected with one of the home plating kits if you are that picky. Too many slots in the crown also, but it's probably the closest you are going to find:

No, that's not it.

Barney, Serge - I have just taken photos of the locking nuts on my MGA dynamo and engine mounts - it was already out on the drive after a lovely morning's drive to sunny Widnes to put on a display for visiting Chinese delegation from Nanjiing/MG - cheers Cam

Cam, - Those look like Nyloc nuts on your generator.

Randy (RJ), - You got it right, thanks.

These things are called "all metal stiffnuts". I was fishing all over the net for hours and finally found a realy good picture with lots of views and details. I also found some manufacturers and sales sources. The original supplier for MG was Aerotech. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/restore/rt104d.htm

Barney-
Once again thank you for your effort in setting some of the details right. I always loved these nuts, but long since gave up on trying to get it all across to people. These are the true heritage of the cars, and the men and thought that built them. Compare to the "SU screws" thread on the "other" MGB board, errghh!!

I may just lay in a supply, since you have been so kind as to find the sources.

Another medal for Barney!!

No concours points for me then Barney! - cheers Cam
