MG MGA - Engine Noise @ 27000 RMP

I have a 67 MGB. The engine was rebuilt before I bought it. It sounds good, runs smooth, lots of power but it makes a load tapping noise over a small RPM range. The noise is not present lower then 27000 rpm and its not present above 27000. So its just present over a very small range say 26000 to 28000 RPM.

I don't know how to describe the noise other then it's heavier then the typical tappet noise.

When the engine is under load, say accellerating, the noise is much louder.

I've checked the timing and adjusted the valves and it doesn't make a difference. Any suggestions?
Ken

I should think so.

Hi Ken. I wish I had an MG engine that would rev to 28,000 RPM! Surely you meant 2800 RPM? lol Glenn

Yes 2700 not 27000. My goof! rofl

Ken,
Check your rod and main bearings. A lot of people call a head gasket or timing chain repair a rebuild when selling cars.

Sorry, I cannot pass this one up.
Wow!
27,000 revolutions per minute!
Check for a starter drive/Bendix, they can do that. My '65 'B' did. Plus the gear shift lever has a noise like that. Or a loose exhaust , dynamo etc.

Questions and Answers

Q. When I start my MGB after not using it for a few days, I hear a light knocking that goes away as soon as the oil pressure comes up. What does this indicate?

A. The noise you hear may be a worn rod bearing that has developed too much clearance. You most likely have a similar noise at about 2,700 rpm when you accelerate in low gears. Do not continue driving until the cause has been found.

Interesting-- does anybody know what would cause it to sound off at 2700 rpm, harmonics??
gil

Gil,
I think this is where the load on the engine is light enough that the rod floats freely on the crankshaft without being under high enough load to hold it to the crankshaft.
