MG MGA - Engine Numbers
Does anyone know what the prefix BR means in a 1500 engine number? I have a 57 engine that starts BR15GBxxxx |

Bill , I never see "BR15GBxxx" numbers on MGA engine but I know there is "BP15GBxxx" numbers that corresponding of early version of 1500 MGA engine .Then later they take only 15GBxxx serials numbers to the first 1600 MGA . Maybe check carefully your number if it's really " BP " and not " BR " Jules. |

Jules, you were correct - the aged plate was showing an artifact that made the 'P' look like an 'R' Interesting fact - this serial number plate was stamped with the car number and the engine prefix before it was mounted on the car, but the engine number was struck after it was attached - it has never been off and you can clearly see and feel the imprint of the engine number on the firewall panel under the plate - they were struck by another (heavier) hand. Interesting. I'm sure they were glad to eliminate that manual task when they stopped stamping engine numbers a bit later on. |
