MG MGA - Engine out Bonnet on
Just been browsing through my photographs and came across my last engine removal. I remember from a recent thread that the advice given was to remove the bonnet. The attached picyure shows that it can also be done with the bonnet still in place: http://freespace.virgin.net/stephen.gyles/odds_and_sods.htm The engine lifting straps are from the brake chute of a Lightning jet fighter! Hi Steve, thanks for the tip on holding up the bonnet - a friend tied his bonnet the to the garage roof beam but your method means the car can be moved without disconnecting the rope. Did you remove the engine complete with gearbox? Cheers Cam |

Cam Not as a rule. I have never had any problem splitting the 2 and re-mating. I have always done the job single-handed which sometimes can be bit of a trick when I want to lower the hoist a smidge whilst rocking the engine. My refit method also involves putting a jack under the bell-housing to get the alignments correct. Steve |

Steve, I used your advice not to remove bonnet on the BGT last week; attached it to the roof beam. Good tip: it saved masses of time and all that realignment. Engine and box out together for the first time. Not easy on your own. Will split engine & box when I do the A later in the Summer. Shane |

Steve's method is the same one I use, except I use a leveller and L brackets (from a Magnette) mounted to the rocker cover retaining studs instead of the Lightning straps. I can take an engine out in about 2 hours, and reinstall in about 4 1/2 hours, including all setting up and a tea break or two. I suppose it just means I have done this job too often over the years and can now do it on autopilot without looking at the workshop manual even for the various settings and sequences! |

A bit faster than me Dominic although I did once get a Ford Cortina engine out in 50 minutes (bit more space in there to work). Steve |
