MG MGA - Engine removal

I'm about to pull the engine.
Which is the best place to hoist from ?

Duncan

Hi Duncan. I take a length of chain and bolt one end around the exhaust manifold, and bolt the other end around the front motor mount on the opposite side. This chain positioning tilts the engine and transmission at a steep angle that is perfect for drive train removal. I'm sure other folks will have different preferences. Cheers, Glenn

Get hook as close as possible to the top of the rocker cover over no.3 cylinder, this makes tilting easier. Use a shackle to stop chain running through hook when engine is tilted.

This covers everything else.

Cheers.

The correct place is with a pair of L shaped brackets attached to the studs that hold the rocker cover in place. I have a pair of these salvaged from a Magnette in a scrap yard about 15 years ago.

It's much easier also if you have a load leveller, otherwise getting things lined up as you put the engine back in can be a bit of a bear.

A tip to getting things back in is to use a large bar between the chassis and the engine mounts, which then allows you to push backwards when everything is lined up. A big spanner on the dognut helps to get the clutch splines lined up with the input shaft of the gearbox, after which it should be plain sailing.
