MG MGA - Engine serial numbers

How many of us can truly tell that the engine in our MGA's is really the same as the original one , when the car was built .

My reflection is : maybe we can do a simple mathematic exercise .

Ex: For an MGA 1600 MkII

Total production : 109070

Substract the 6 last digit from your serial number of your car from the total production ( 109070 )

Keep the result and substract it from the final serial number of 1600 MkII engine they had produce for MGA(8851).

Then you have to verify the accuracy of your result .

Is anybody already try this ?

Jules,

Unfortunately you cannot mathematically match engine and chassis numbers.
At the MG factory engines were fitted to cars in no particular order. You can estimate a range of possible numbers, but that is all.
The only hope is the factory production records and these are often incomplete.
Many of these records are held by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust at the Gaydon museum.
Some people have done a lot of research and many numbers can be matched.

How can anyone be sure of any number on the car when these are so easy to swop! Just look at any car show and ALL the numbers on any plates are like brand new, you can make your car have matching numbers very very easily.

The Twink on ebay could make £4000+. Who's bidding? Twink engines are around, expect to pay £3000+ for a second hand unit (no carbs, manifolds etc) They are expensive to rebuild, this goes for the car aswell. I know, I'm doing one at the momment!

Terry so you reckon the one on the ebay is a waste of time?

Hi Alfredo

Re ebay Twin Cam. Absolutly not! I'm sure it would be a great project but will involve a lot of time and expense. It would be great to have another Twink Coupe on the road. I am tempted but already have 3 MGA coupes, the wife would not be amused!
