MG MGA - Engine starting - mid-restoration?

I'm in the process of a body-off restoration of my 1500 ('58). I have just put the engine back on the frame after having not run for a few years. I would like to start and test the engine before continuing with the body, etc.

What needs to be done before safely starting the engine? I can get fuel to the carbs. Electrically, I can ground (negative) the engine, and then run a positive cable to the starter (when I want it to start) and another to the coil (bypassing the starter switch).

Do I need the voltage regulator anywhere in this equation? What have I failed to consider?

Thanks!
Chet Harter

Chet, all you need to do is hook up your coil to the hot side of your starter switch. There is no need to hook up the electrical end of the generator or any other part of your electrical system. Enclosed is a pic of what I did to actually drive it around. I would strongly advise this so you can work out the bugs with out the body on. It minimizes the back aches! I found the seal on the front of my gear box was leaking making it a lot easier to repair! Let me know if you need more pics of my "Test Gig" to hold the steering and radiator!

One more image, and also do not forget to hook up your OIL GAUGE! It shold be showing preasure while cranking.

It may be so obvious that you forgot to mention it in your post, but be sure to hook up the radiator and heater (or, alternatively, bypass the heater with a hose shunt)and fill the cooling system (and add oil to the crankcase, for that matter). It's surprising how simple things like these can ruin your whole day, if overlooked.

Here's another.

Chet,
Guess how I learned to remember to hook up the oil pressure gage... The standing joke with my buddies is "How much oil pressure does it have? Oh, about three feet...." :) Also, if you put coolant in, make sure to install the water temp probe or plug the hole. However, for short test runs radiator and coolant aren't really necessary.
This is a great time...have fun with it!

I am at the same stage you are. I also plugged heater fittings. I have the dash hooked up temporary to make it easier to read oil / temp gauge. I also have my steering wheel on and have driven for short distance to check out clutch and brakes. Ron
