MG MGA - EX182! RECOVERED

EX182/38, recently recovered from long term storage of 25+ years. Car is somewhat tatty, but with unique wonderful origional peices, to be fully mechanically and cosmetically restored to 1955 Le Mans specifications. Detailed restoration to be carried out as soon as the information needed to do so is fully assembled, so that we can give this car what it deserves. Car formerly thought to be the Ted Lund car. All evidence now shows that it is the Miles/Lockett car. Any assistance in the form of period pictures, personal accounts, or verified information would be extrememly helpful in restoring the car.
Cheers,

On a less serious note, any idea as to how to make my name appear as Jeremy Savage as opposed to JBS Savage:-P
thanks

Thanks much John.
Also would like to add that any questions about the car are welcomed, I have spent the last 48 hours of my life crawling all over, and i mean ALL over the car (my father
got one picture of my feet sticking up over the steering wheel as I had wedged myself into the footwell in order to examine a custom accelerator more carefully:-P

Jeremy, exciting news! I'm sure many share my curiosities. Tell us, tell us. Where was the car? How did you find it?, Buy it? What is the cars recent history? What "custom" bits and work was done to the car. What is its conditon now? Let us know, keep us posted. Thanks

I thought there might be something to your recent post. Congratulations on finding a true one of a kind. I hope that the restoration goes well, and wish you the best with it.

I am weary of saying too much, because it is a new member of the family and I havent quite gotten to know her yet:-). For now ill hold you over with some fun little peices of info. The accelerator is custom rigged, to enable the driver to role his/her foot over off the break on a downshift (heel-toing), the left side of the pedal shows immense wear from this sort of driving:-). The seats , although they appear to be recovered, are not your typical mga seats, but are the racing seats from the le mans ex182 cars (very neat to sit in that drivers seat). The seats are designed to adjust, as I hear Miles was a very tall man. The cover to access the battery is custom made, and different from that which you would see on a normal mga. The tranny tunnel is aluminium and custom. Still looking into other details, and will keep this post running hopefully. As for where I got it, the car came from the widow of Jerry goguen, in NH (stateside), and it had been in storage for a long long time. I have some pics we took of the car coming out of the garage and into the trailer, very special moment:-).
keep in touch!

An initial word of warning when you get going with your bodywork restoration and how you handle the panels. In case you do not already know, the EX182 cars had entirely aluminum bodies, not just the bonnet, boot and doors as on the production cars.

I was aware of that steve, thank you. But weve got aways to go before we start on the restoration anyway. Ill keep this post open and updated as the project progresses.

Have a look at the following site and details of EX182/38. There seems a possibility that this car was broken up at Abingdon.

Steve, as for the link you dropped, that is one article that raises the biggest quesiton of all as to the identity of the car (what car it was at Le mans). However other articles exclusivly contradict the claims made in the article by Rob Higgens. Regardless as it raises question to the cars identity. And we are researching the history of the car extensivly to provide more clarity as to its identity.
Best regards,
Jeremy
P.s. If I get my real work outta the way later today, I will do what i can to post some pics of the car in current condition. No promises though:-)

Fascinating. Please don't think I am being sceptical. Cautious perhaps. It's just that my job since giving up piloting fighter planes has been military analysis and I rarely take anything at face value. Nevertheless, it certainly looks a very exciting find and once verified as a genuine EX182 (38?)will cause some rewriting of MGA history.

Until this time yesterday I believe the oldest known surviving MGA was 'Mabel' (MBL 867) chassis No. 10105, fifth off the production line. You now appear to have a very major item of MG heritage and, I guess, with it goes a heavy burden of responsibility. Best of luck with your research. If you need any help in making contact with any of the experts and historians over this side of the pond please just ask. Always happy to try and help in any way.

All the best

Steve
Steve Gyles

Thanks much steve, and I understand that you and many others are sceptical or cautious. Whatever the adjective, let me just say this: the process of purchasing this car was extended over more then a year. At first we too were extremely skeptical, although, after looking into it further and doing what research we could for a years time, we decided that it was fairly clear that it is ex182/38. As for your offer regarding contacting experts and historians over in europe, it is one that I am sure we will take you up on. There is so much to be done and researched on the car, that it is hard to know where to start. But once we establish a bit of a plan of action im sure we will be regular vistors to the U.K. and I am sure that on special occasions the car will join us. On a more general note, I am sure youve noticed my use of the word "we". My father is the "owner" of the car, and I am but 15 years old. However due to his technological illiteracy, I am doubtful that he will be a regular on the boards. A little about us. My father grew up around british cars, he bought his first car, a black TC at age 13 and the car is still in the garage today (lots of spirit in that one). We do all our "car stuff" together, and my passion for the history of the cars, and the heritage is almost overwhelming at times. Our love of cars centers specifically around british cars, we love race cars of the 50s, and more specifically researching them. This is the beginning of a new chapter for us, and hopefully we will see you all along the way.
cheers,

Amazing find!!!! When can we expect photos??? Seeing is believing.

Jeremy,
You will want to contact Robin Barker of the Twin Cam owners group, he has historical info on this car going back to the late 60's when Gord Whatley acquired it in a very sorry state in Canada and restored it before selling it to Gerry a few years later in the late 70s. This car has always been something of a question mark since it had already been rebodied with a production steel shell before Gord acquired it, it also appears to have a production chassis under it. OTOH, there are a lot of other very authentic bits that were on it. One possibility is that it is EX182 that was lent to the FitzWilliams team, who wrecked it in '57 and returned to the factory. No one knows what happened to that car but they may well have rebodied it at the factory and passed it on to BMC Canada. I'll dig though my files for some photos I took of the car in '79 when it was displayed alongside EX 181 at Cooperstown, NY and email them to you.

I'm sure we've all seen them, but in case someone hasn't, here are a couple photos of EX182.

Jeremy, Congratulations. I don't mean to steal traffic from this site but if you would like to post pictures for people to see, go to www.mgbexperience.com, and check out the MGA forum there. Also, if you want to go ahead and post on the main MGB section, that would be great too. We have several younger people on it and are always looking for more. I'd love to see some pictures!!

I forwarded this thread URL to George Dutton of the the MG Car Club(UK) MGA Register - see following thread: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccmga/rahmen_b.htm.

He in turn has forwarded it to the MGA Register Historian Piers Hubbard. He will be most interested in your find and will most likely be in contact before long.

Thank you steve! I had emailed Mr Hubbard when we firstwent to see the car in person, and had tried to scrounge up any information I could without giving away the existance of the car. Recently I emailed him to tell him we had aquired it, and I think maybe I linked this post to him, but maybe not. Curious I have not heard from him. But then again real life does kinda take presedence. Well not always but most of the time:-)
Best regards,
Jeremy
P.s. I have a few pics ready to display. Unfortunatly my brother took them in extremely high quality high resolution format. Subsequently they are very very large. Will see what I can do to make them easier to access over the internet. For anyone that simply cannot wait send me your email and ill email them to you.

I am in school now, and am leaving for chicago for the weekend at 6. SO hopefully I will be able to get the pics out beforehand.

Jeremy,
Back in Feb '05 there was a fellow in Colorado who passed year back away and his widow had what was believed to be a Lemans MGA, I was in touch with her regarding purchase of all 3 black cars (2 mga'a and a TD). The cars we sold out from under me and the mga's proved to be just ordinary pieces.

YOur name did come up on one occaision...is this one of those cars?
Tony Giordano
Tony Giordano

J,
Why did Jerry Goguen keep this a secret during all those years whilst he was selling his collection?
He was one of the most notable MG collectors around.
Any comments ?

You should also put the car on a trailer and bring it to Limerock on October 7/8 for all of us to view.

Thanks
Tony Giordano

I assume this is the same EX-182 that was on display in Jerry's museum in Vermont for years. If so, then it was never a secret. It was also offered for sale to the public by his widow, Doris, after his death.

So, if it was a secret, it wasn't kept too well.

Sorry, I thought this was another one since that one in the museum was a known quanatity...Is it the same?

It is the Ex goguen car. As for the knowledge of the car. Those of us in New England knew the car well, My father and I determined it was very important to get the word out all over the world, to MG enthusiasts everywhere. As for the title of this post "recovered", the car was living a life of inactivity in the hands of mr and mrs. Goguen, and although they fully appretiated the car, it did not make sense to restore it to fully bring out its potential and its history. As for the car in colarado, we too were in contact with Mrs. Lehsten, and traced the car to the buyer, whom confirmed that it was indeed a plain jane MGA, and informed us that Mr. Lehsten had a tendency to "twist the truth" if you will, and was a dreamer. Finally, it is my mothers birthday the weekend of fall finale at limerock, and so unless I think of an AWESOME excuse, it is unlikely that we or the car will attend.
Best Regards,

Jeremy,

why don't you post your mothers emailadress so we can all send her an email pleading for your appearance?

I mean, mothers age every year, EX's are only discovered ones a century: it's your duty to come!

(yes, we're having a beer at work...)

Well, were not that far from Limerock, so its remotely possible we could run up for one day. Depends if parents are planning on going anywhere.

This morning we registered the domain name Ex182.com, and I expect to have some general info and pictures posted at the end of this week. I am interested in possibly setting up a forum there dedicated to the car and questions. Thoughts and Suggestions!

Jeremy,

Congratulations on the purchase! My father and I purchased the ex David Ash/Gus Ehrman/John Van Driel 1957 Sebring MGA from the Goguens. Our car sat next to the EX 182 in the museum, so I'm a bit familiar with it. As stated here there has been a lot of speculation about the car, but I personally think it is the real thing or as much of the real thing as possible based on racing/wrecks/rebuilds etc...which is not uncommon for a race car.

Also as has already been suggested, you will need to contact Gord if you have not already. I met him at Watkins Glen last year and it was neat because he was looking over my car and comparing it to mods for your car. He had told me of the visit he had with Henry Stone (an ex competitions mechanic) who came to the US for an MG T event and came up to Gord's to look at the car. At that time and according to Gord, Henry confirmed several of the mods that were done to the EX car as it was a factory test bed of sorts. So you must get ahold of Gord. If you do not have contact info for him let me know and I can get it for you.

Also, get to Lime Rock Oct 7/8 if you can. RenownTwin Cam and Comps car restorer Bob West will be there and perhaps he can share his knowledge of the car with you. Feel free to contact me directly if you need any details. Also, somewhere I have a picture of Mr. Goguen in the car from when he brought it to DC for a meet in 95/96 or so from the Washington Post. As soon as I can find the article I'll scan and send it. Good luck with the car and feel free to drop a line.

Jeremy:

Very exciting stuff. The website is a great idea, and I'm sure many of us will follow your progress.

I work in Providence, and I think I've heard of your dad through some common acquaintances. I was wondering if you will be restoring the car locally, or if you plan to ship the car for restoration elsewhere?

Regards,
M.D.

M. D.

To M.D.
unsure of restoration plans as of right now. I am pushing for a local restoration as I feel very strongly that the car needs to be fully preserved and a little mistake in this case could erase history. However it may be diffuclt to find someone capable so well see. If you work in providence im sure we could arrange for you to stop by and see teh car if youd like. Email me at JeremyBSavage@gmail.com if youd like.

Hi. I am the Event Chairman for the Fall Finale. If you are planning on bringing the car, I can arange so you can be a pace car for one or two races. Let me know.

Does anyone have photos yet? I'd love to see the car.

I posted some of his pictures here:

along with some notes and links to additional information about EX182 cars.

Could have brought the car and driven it around the track at lunch on friday.

For what it is worth, I belive I have a few shots of it at Westminster. I even have some pics of it at the old barn after Gerry's passing. It was stored there under a canvas tarp when last I saw it. Great to hear of the car again. The disposition of much of Gerry's collection was a crime.
