MG MGA - Exhaust Straps

Hi everyone,

The sorting out process is proceeding nicely! I've restored the M/C, brake lines, brake slave cylinders, MGB clutch, lighter flywheel, rebuilt carbs, and even have all of the missing cooling system parts I needed. I'm topping it off with stainless steel exhaust but...

The old exhaust did not have the horizontal and vertical straps, so I ordered them from Moss. Now I'm wondering what to attach them to. I've heard that they go to some engine bolts, but with the engine out right now, that's not that clear. Anyone have a photo (or a better description)?

Thanks,

If the two small straps you are talking about are 2 or 3 inches long, they attach to the exhaust pipe then go to the transmission where the engine and trans meet.

Rich:

The other end of the straps attach to what looks like a handle on the upper end of the exhaust pipe, near the manifold connection. Good luck.

I have a Falcon stainless exhaust system, purchased through Moss Motors back in 1986. The design and construction is probably unchanged today. I have never been able to get the longer strap to line up with anything. The shorter strap attaches nicely to the nearest bolt on the bellhousing.

Whether you attach the longer strap to anything or not, the shorter strap has a tendency to crack and break with engine vibration, leaving the pipe free to wobble about. This may eventually damage the packing ring at the manifold commection, and may even lead to failure of one of the flamge attachment studs (or a broken manifold).

The solution I have found is to not use the longer strap, but double up on the short one. Since I began using two short straps together it has never broken, and I have a happy exhaust system.

Thanks, Barney. The old exhaust was held on with nothing - no straps, just the three studs to the manifold. So I'm guessing this will be a huge improvement.
