MG MGA - Experience with Jaguar by Jorge

Has anyone had experience with parts from Jaguar by Jorge? http://www.jaguarbyjorge.com/MGA.htm

I am most interested in the front valance and the rocker panels.
James Anderson

I have ne experience with parts from Jorge.

Have you tried searching the archives for "Jorge"?

Also, Jorge sells on eBay as "angelheartpancho". Feedback of 994 with 99.3% +ve. Not too bad.

James,

I purchased a fuel tank from Jorge. The product seems to be of godd quality. His charge for shipping was a little high but many items on e-bay have high shipping costs.

I bought two items from Jorge. The first item, a front X panel, was perfect. The second was a set of rocker panels. The rocker panels were not good. They did not have the correct lines to match up at the bottom without significant bending and adjustment. I had an old set of Moss covers laying around to compare them to and after examining the differences I decided to use the Moss covers. I have no idea how old the Moss ones were nor who made them but they sure seemed to be the best. I took pictures of the problems and explained with measurements why the set was bad. I then sent them back to his shop. He sent them back after saying that he had checked the measurements claiming that they were "good". Well they weren't and I sent them back again to him for a refund. To his credit, he did eventually refund the money leaving me to pay for the postage. He also threw in a nice comment like "Nobody else has seemed to have problems with them" and ended up getting a little pissy. I asked him to explain what part of my pictures and measurements he did not agree with and got no response. So there is no classic thumbs up or thumbs down on the guy. After all, the X panel was perfect in every way but I did have a bit of a problem with having the rockers sent back after showing, with pictures, exactly where his panels did not cut the mustard. I suppose that as long as he does keep the money back guarantee you could just order and see which you want to keep.

I just ordered a number of parts from Jorge. I will report on them when received. I will not be fitting them right away, so there may be quite a delay in my reporting on the fits.

I bought a rear xmission tunnel from Jorge/angelheart via eBay. It was a quality item and fit my MkII with very little extra work. He still sells them and many other parts via eBay.

If you look at the Eclectic motorworks web site they indicate that they have to "modify" all rocker panels as none of them fit!

Not sure how true this is, especialy if the Moss ones are ok.

I purchased a grille from Jorge last summer. I was very pleased with the quality of the part, but was not pleased that I was overcharged on shipping.
Andy Bounsall

Mark and Andy, how much were you overcharged for shipping? How do you figure you were overcharged? Massive add-on for handling over the cost of UPS or whoever?

Derek Nicholson

Derek, I was charged $45.00 for shipping. Actual postage on the package was $25.25. You can decide for yourself if that's a reasonable "handling" charge. In my book it's not.
Andy Bounsall

Andy, $20 is a bit much for packaging and handling, I guess. Especially from a commercial enterprise. The could/should build the cost of this into the price but, on the other had, if they're trying to snag those that shop largely by price then they might chose to do it this way.

Slightly related, I've noticed recently thay lots of items on eBay have rediculously low Buy-it-Now prices and even more rediculous Shipping Charges! But if you combine the two, the overall price, shipped, is reasonable. I strongly suspect that Sellers are doing this so that thay have to pay less to eBay, who (I think) only charge their %age on the selling price and not on the shipping.

In their defense, the eBay listing does tell you to check with them for shipping costs. When I buy on eBay and there's no shipping cost listed or no calculator, I contact the seller befoe I bid.

Since, apparently, your grill arrived safely and undamaged, we can assume that the $20 gave you some good, effective packaging.

P.S. Going to the Ottawa British Car Day later this month? Assuming the weather co-operates, I'll be there in a 'b, 'A or Mini.

Derek Nicholson

Derek, yes the part arrived safely. It was in a (used) cardboard box stuffed with (used) newspaper.

If you've seen Jorge's prices - even on eBay - he is NOT catering to the shopper who's looking for the cheapest price. He's catering to the buyer who's looking for a high quality part and who's prepared to pay for it. If his costs justify needing an additional $20, then he should just charge $20 more for the part. I think people who're buying his parts would still buy them. He'd end up getting what he needs to cover his costs and wouldn't end up making those buyers feel they're being "nickle-and-dimed".

Re Ottawa All British Car Day on the 15th: Look me up if you make it. Weather permitting, I'll be there with my '56 roadster.

Andy Bounsall

I had a strange conflict with him. I bought a front valance and rocker panels. I requested a qoutation of shipping, which he sent to me. However, after sending the items he emailed that "my wife has made an error, the shipping was actually USD 50,- more. People in Finland are very nice, you will certainly understand....". When I refused I received several insulting messages like "people are the same everywrehe, I do not need your business etc." The quolity of the panels were not too bad.
Tomi Lundell

One reason for charging shipping separately is that the tax man collects his cut only on the sale price IF the shipping is called out separately. If lumped together then the entire amount is taxed.

I also bought rockers from Jorge. They didn't fit. I sent him back one of the rockers and he made some adjustments to it but it was still off. I also got the comment that nobody else was complaining and that there was something not right about my car. I finally pulled them off and installed some others I found. I have bought a gas tank from him also I am not to the point of installing it. I looks good comparing it to the old one but the welding looks kind of sloppy. While we're on the subject of panels I bought a dog leg patch panel for the rear fender from Moss that looks pretty bad. I'm thinking of returning it. Are Jorge's any better?

John
I just installed the rear fender dog leg from Jorges, it fits but the flange is a little deep and the inner fender edge is not quite as wide as original...just a little extra work and it will be just fine....the ones I bought from moss were not even close, the main crease in the fender was off by about a 1/4 of an inch when matched from side to side...no chance to even make them fit...stay in touch as we fit these new dog legs...u have my email address...

JORGE IS A FINE UPSTANDING HONEST MAN. I HAVE PURCHASED ABOUT $3,000.00 WORTH OF REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR MY 140XK. THE PARTS FIT FINE. SOME JAGUAR PARTS NEEDED TO BE HAND FIT BECAUSE THE CARS WERE HAND MADE. WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE COMPLANING ABOUT; SHIPPING. GO TO XKUNLIMIITED OR MOSS AND BUY THE SAME PARTS FOR DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THE COST AND THE SHIPPING IS STILL HIGH.

My parts from Jorge are due tomorrow. I will inspect an report on them then. One of the parts is an aluminum fuel tank. I am anxious to see the quality--I wasn't cheap--but not that much more than the Moss or VB steel tanks. I am hoping for the best. So far Jorge has been entirely honest and easy to deal with.
James Johanski

From a blurb Jorge used to put in his ebay descriptions: I sell these parts to the retailers and they don't like it that I'm selling direct, but I don't care! Or something close to that. So you're just eliminating the middleman.

It's wonderful that there are still craftsmen out there to keep our beloved machines running and looking good. If there were a Jag (or MG or Triumph) dealer that had these parts, they would be astronomically priced. I drove 800 miles to find a TR dealer with tranny parts back in the '70's. And he still didn't have everything I needed. But I was glad to get them at (almost) any price. I had to pay $100 back then for a set of used needle bearings.

Relax, Ed. These are comments and feedback between consenting adults. If we can't comment or give feedback (yours included), we might as well shut down the BBS. I've just re-read the whole thread and I don't see ANYTHING that should be in the Flame Wars section.

Well my parts arrived from Jorge yesterday. I am withholding comment here until I get a response to my e-mail to Jorge. At this point, I can say that there are some issues that need to be resolved.
James Johanski

Well, I just got off the phone with Jorge. At this point in time I am too upset to comment in depth. It is better to evaulate these things in the light of a new day. Let me just say this for now--If you are contemplating buying from Jorge, please e-mail before buying for an opinion of my experiences. When I am calm, I will comment on the quality and value of the parts. At this juncture, most of the parts were fine, but poorly packed, especially for the shipping amounts charged. The overall cost of the parts were about the same charged from the other vendors including their shipping costs. The real problem was that some of the parts were not very good. As I said, I am too upset to comment in detail at this point in time.
James Johanski

I got a grill from Jorge and had some fitting problems with contour, not mounting bolts or holes. He offered to build one to fit if I could provide a pattern. Because the problem was minor and the whole thing not worth the trouble I just kept the grill and it fits well enough, although far from perfect.

Jorge's grills are heavy gauge matal and plated very well. NO problems with that. Except that it won't bend to force-fit like the origional

Jim
PS: When does an MGA grill ever fit right?
Jim Ferguson

Purchased and used a rear gearbox tunnel for a client. Supposed to be the best at the time- about a year ago. Anyways, The sheet metal was not quite perfect and had to beat the panel out for about 2 hours which I expect with almost everything to do with restoration of anything especially at these prices. That said, its always not so fun to explain to an owner why you are charging them an additional few hours to install a new part. Be glad these parts are still available otherwise having someone only do one in their life would make for an extreme cost.
