MG MGA - Famous racing driver buys a MGA

Previous threads on the BBS have mentioned well known people who have a MGA.
I thought that I would mention that Vern Schuppan has recently bought mga twin cam chassis # YD2 1767.
I don't know who is aware of Vern Schuppan's career, but he drove in 12 Formula 1 races with a best of 7th place. As a Works Porsche driver he came 2nd outright at the Le Mans 24 hour race in both 1977 and 1982. He won Le Mans outright in 1983.
He came 3rd in the Indianapolis 500 race in 1981.

He's finally come home! We in the M.G. world and especially the Twin Cam community wish Vern all the best with the world's fastest--still to this day--1.5 liter engined car.
Paul Hanley

So a Twink is faster than the 1500cc turbo-charged Formula 1 cars of the mid-80's?

No wonder there were reliability issues with that engine!
James Reinhardt

James, I think you know as well as everyone that Paul means non-turbo, normally aspirated engine.
Gary Lock

So would a Porsche 550 Spyder then not count as faster than a Twink?

Before I get all you MGA guys all hot under the colour, let me make it clear that I really like A's, and appreciate the Twin Cam for what it is, I just question the claim that it is the fastest 1.5 litre engined car ever built.

I'd have to agree. I think my 79 Honda cvcc S was faster.

In 1957 Stirling Moss drove a twin cam supercharged MG special at 245 mph at Utah salt flats this was follwed in 1959 by Phil Hill who achieved 254 mph with a MG twin cam special slightly over the 1.5 litre at 1506cc - a world record at the time for under 2 litres- has the Porsche or Honda broken that recently? Cheers Cam

Yeahh,,
And EX181 had a Shorrock blower almost the size of her engine to achieve that speed....
Johnb

Your point being John?

Aren't we talking standard production (sports) cars here ???
Johnb

My 1500 was fast in 1958 but was by no means the fastest, The 1958 Lotus Elite with under 1300 cc did 118mph. We love our cars and its great that Shuppan has bought a twinky - but let's not kid ourselves.

Well it seems my id has been hijacked. Not sure why but oh well.

My last post was regarding my fancy (not so) Honda I had in college.

>Aren't we talking standard production (sports) cars here ??? <
I don't know Johnb - you better ask Paul what his original thought was - but he did just state "fastest 1.5 litre engined car" although maybe he was referring to Vern's latest acquisition. Cheers Cam
