MG MGA - Fender Skirts
Are they available? Were they ever available? Rutger Booy has a pic of an MGA with skirts. http://rutgerbooy.nl/MGA_&_Magnette_specials.htm |

They look rather horrible -and they looked nasty on the XK120 as well -my friend has deskirted his - but I do like the idea of the T series type spare wheel - cheers Cam |

I agree with Cam about the skirts. The link was interesting though. Good bit on airflow over the MGA body: http://rutgerbooy.nl/MGA_&_Magnette_specials_page_2.htm Steve |

Hi Steve, The article on the airflow makes interesting reading esp. the scuttle air vents - but who said that air had to go out of them anyway - going in would cool things just as well wouldn't it? Cheers Cam |

I've been told that the grills on the fender arches serve to purposes. At low speeds, as in traffic, they allow heat to rise out of the engine bay. Once to a speed of around 35MPH the pressure pocket in front of the windscreen will push cool air in onto the carbs. The placement and function of those grills is no accident. |

Steve, Steve, Steve, you may be a great photographer, but you are lousy at spelling (Like Me). To should be "TWO". I hope I did not miss a road run on New Years day. When is the next Juan? |
JEFF BECKER |
Steve, this is true. I have run a test using short pieces of light thread attached to the oval grill. Amazingly it shows outward airflow at idle and slow speeds. At around-town speeds, it just kind of sits there not knowing what to do. Then, somewhere around 30 to 40 MPH, the airflow is inward to the engine bay. Whether this was intended to provide air to the carbs or not is anybody's guess. Chuck |

Ok, I know how to spell both variations of "two". I just missed the 'w' key! Truth be told, I just got a new keyboard with a different key style and I'm making a lot of typos. I've fixed four or five in this post alone! There were a lot of runs on New Years Day but I didn't organize any of them. Just me and another guy in our TCs. That's old TC, not MGA TC! http://www.socalbritishmotoring.com/viewtopic.php?t=20 |

Well, Cam, Steve, and Derek, ya'll just take turns hammering my sense of style. I thought they looked cool. Maybe I would have to see them on the car. But, the question remains, are they and/or were they ever available? My guess is probably not. |
Wray |
Wray - I think probably not also - sorry my taste does not agree with yours - each to his own - cheers Cam |

Mr Wray Like others I am not sure if I like or dislike the look of skirts on an MGA. There is a certain ...je ne sais quoi...about the look. Fender skirts on a Coupe might be more appropriate than on a roadster but....I just don't know. As for the availability or where you could buy them, good luck. My opinion is that they must have been custom made and any competent panel beater should be able to produce a set for you. My personal taste (if they were being custom made ) would be to reduce the amount of..buldge.. present in the pictured ones. A closer proximity to the fender line would be more attractive. Good luck in your search. Gordon |
Gordon Harrison |
Gordon, that is one issue that may be a bit tough, reducing the bulge, since the knockoffs sit so proud from the wheel. Cam, you may be right. Make a set, put them on then hurl at the sight of them. |

There are two photos of an MGA with fender skirts on this page: http://www.britishcarforum.com/bcforum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm |

I have no idea how I pasted the wrong link in, sorry! I wish there was an edit option. Here is the intended link: http://www.mgnuts.com/mg/modslate/ |

Somewhere in my past I remember seeing an MGA with fender skirts that were close fitting. They had a notch that the the knock-off protruded through with sufficient vertical clearance for axle movement. But as we all know Memory loss is the second sign of old age. Therefore I don't remember where it was. Sandy |
