MG MGA - finish/coating for master cylinder

Greetings, all -- I am rebuilding my master cylinder -- along with the MGA it goes in to -- and it has corroded on teh outside -- was it painted originally or coated in some fashion?

What color? or what finish? Any help would be appreciated.

As per The Original MGA it states that the master cylinder was left as an unpainted casting and the supply cover in natural metal finish. If I was doing mine again I would paint the master cylinder casting with a product like Eastwoods cast iron finish so that it would not rust.Check around I'm sure there are other products out there to use. I painted mine with black Imron at the time and it looks ok. Gary

It says that the master cylinder was unpainted, but it must have been treated in some way. It would have surface rust before the Dealer could sell the car. Probably phosphated (dipped in phosphoric acid).
It needs to be treated or painted. The cast iron finish suggested could do it.

Hi KD. I have tried several different coatings over the years and none seem to hold up or last very long. My advice is to let the master cylinder rust! This seems to be the "natural" colour of most MGA master cylinders I have ever seen. This part rusted on me, even after being well coated with clear epoxy!!!! Just my 2 cents worth, Glenn

Clear wax. I did not clean the protective coating from mine (I bought them all new in 1989) and they are still untouched by rust - after more than 100k miles...

Another reason to use silicon brake fluid. I glass bead the cyls to remove rust. Once clean and dry I polish the exterior on the wire wheel side of my grinder.I preferr the polished look to the flat look after glass beading. I then paint with a clear paint. Epoxy paint is best. The finish stays on and clear if silicon fluid is used.
