MG MGA - First Pull Over

Well I've made it 3 months and finally got pulled over in the MGA.

I just cleaned the air filters and had it out on the country road by home. I decided to give her a little legs to run the excess oil out of the filters, just happened to be in front of an township officer.

Dumb, just dumb.

Well apparently he is a vintage car fan and let me go with an appropos commentary on how stupid it was to be going 55 in a 35 and no ticket.

Got very lucky.

Tysen,
Try it out on I-96 between Northville and Lansing. You can usually go 80 - 90 without worry about a pullover.

You are so lucky!

The police around my way would have dished out a ticket for sure. If I was very lucky they might and I mean might knock it down to 15 over so I didn't get points.

Thay are on a quota and have to give out a certain number of tickets per month... Not sure how that's supposed to work if everyone is obeying the posted speed, maybe thats why they give out tickts for 15km's over in the middle of a country road with no houses within eyeshot!

My pull-over was almost pleasurable. A police car followed me for over a mile and, when we stopped at traffic lights, the officer used his loudspeaker to tell me that my brake lights were not working. I knew that the switch was on the way out, but by pressing really hard on the brake pedal I just managed to illuminate them, while also twisting round and grinning at the officer. He seemed happy enough and as we moved away on green his loud speaker burst into life again: "Nice car".

I changed the switch that night.

I had a memorable brush with the boy's in blue in England before moving to Canada.

It was in my midget back then and I was blasting off a motorway, hit the roundabout just right (no traffic), threw it round then got the apex just right for my exit... Policeman just getting into his car after giving a ticket to some other poor bloke.

I was returning from a summer fair and had won my femail companion an enormous stuffed toy, it was an elephant. Well, said elephant was so big he was sitting on the tunnel with his ears flapping like crazy in the wind.

In spite of my heavy breaking... ner, ner, ner, ner, I get pulled over. The older policeman walks slowly up to the drivers side while his younger partner walks round the car, he leans on the windscreen and say's

"Tell me son, does driving a bright red sportscar on a wonderful sunny day usually fill you full of reckless abandon?"

I replied, "No sir, not usually. If you don't believe me you can ask the elephant!"

He tried not to grin and gave me a good talking to about the danger of speed and how it was the young 'ens that end up as tree ornaments, I drove away slowly but without a ticket! I'm much older now but I would not dare to be so cheeky these days!

I was under the impression that 'old' cars were exempt from speeding tickets/camera's etc, they don't go fast enough!( my excuse ) maybe I had better slow down a bit. An MGB owning friend of a friend reckoned I passed him on the motorway doing at least 90, not true, I was doing 100, aren't MGB's slow!! Anyway, its too hot in coupe to wear a pullover

Regards to all

Slowing down Terry

Terry

It's the slow speeds you are dangerous at (less than 5mph) not 100!!

While stock, I always thought gettin pulled over for speeding, instead of a ticket, would merit a trophy.

A few years back in the mid-eighties while driving my 65 MGB. I was pulling away from a stop sign in a small town with a good bit of straight road in front of me. There were two cars coming into town with the second car "a cop" following close behind the first. He was driving on the gravel shoulder trying to hide behind the first. Well I saw him long before he saw me and kept my speed in check as I passed by. He figured I would be speeding on my way out of town and give me an easy ticket.

For the most part around here, I think the cops are very appreciative of our restoration efforts on older cars. However,in and around town and schools they really enforce the speed limit. For the most part I would say you can do 5 to 8 over the speed limit and not get a ticket. Then again if they see something else wrong, it would be a different story.

Years ago I was pulled over in the nearby town of Gig Harbor in my 1968 MGB. This car had one yellow fog light in the middle of the front bumper. On gloomy days I had the habit of driving with it on to increase the car's visibility since, especially in that town, people seemed to pull out in front of me as if I wasn't even there. Anyway, I was driving through town (obeying the speed-trap speed limit) and pass the "Gig Pig" going the opposite direction. He does a fast U-turn and comes up behind me with his lights flashing. I pull over, and he walks up to me and says, "Where's the fire?" My startled response was, "Surely you can come up with a better line than that! Anyway, I wasn't speeding." "No," he says, "The fire! Where's the fire? You've got your fire light on don't you?" I finally realized what he was talking about. "That's a fog light" I said, "It's yellow. Fire lights are green, aren't they?" He walked up to the front of the car, took a good look, shrugged his shoulders and said "OK" and got back in his car and drove off. This was over 20 years ago, and I haven't seen fire lights on cars in a long time. I guess volunteer firemen are supposed to take their time getting to fires nowadays.
