MG MGA - Floorboard Screws

Does anyone know for certain which three floorboard screws had the speedometer cable clips? The Parts List specifies three screws for this. I believe they were all in the righthand toeboard and/or R/H front floorboard. I know that the top one was the upper LH corner for 1500s or the end of the starter cutout for 1600s. Which screws held the remaing two speedometer cable clips.

I believe the Parts list is incorrect, and there is only one 1 1/4inch floorboard screw with a speedometer cable clip attached, not three. It is a misprint.

Interesting.

I also think that the Parts List may have the quantities for left and right reversed. The question has come up because I sent some floorboard plans to someone who was asking about screw locations on this board and he later inquired if I knew the locations of the various length screws that were supplied as a proper MGA kit, and has three such screws. I thought that if I could find out this information I would include it with the floorboard drawings. The cars I have aren't original enough to determine this.

John,
Both my cars are high starter cars (1600's) and it is the screw that is in the cutout for the starter. Hope this helps and have a good day!

Thanks John.

It appears that the Parts List is incorrect and there is only one such clip. There is only one shown with the speedometer cable although it is described as for attachment to the dash. I think that they are using 'dash' to refer to what is elsewhere called bulkhead and commonly called firewall, as 'dash' is also the term they use for the location of the rubber seals, although the clip isn't located there either.

Are the other two long screws used for something else or should they be shorter. It seems that Anglo Parts were fooled by this too. One of the 3/4" screws goes in the top edge of the gearbox cover, but where does the other one go? I can't think of any location in the LH toeboard that would require a shorter screw, they all go through the plywood and into a weld nut. Is this another error?
John DeWolf

John,
In the rear kickboard in the upper outside right hand corner, the screw is also used for the ground connection for the fuel pump. I think this may also be a longer screw as it has a nut attached to it. In the top section of the tranny tunnel where it attaches to the "bulkhead" I believe there are three screws used. The two outside ones sandwitch the floorboards in between the tunnel and bulkhead and the center one just connects the tunnel to the bulkhead. I think the outside screws may also be longer because of the floorboards thickness. It has been a long time since I installed the floorboards in my cars so my memory recall may be wrong. Have a good day!

John,
So, are you going to put a speedometer cable clip on a florboard screw?
Bill

John,
I am looking at the Parts Book, section O.2, itms 47 and 48, it shows a clip and a rubber sleeve for the clip, but the next couple of items that have no item numbers say the clip gets a spring washer and a "Nut for speedometer clip R/H toeboard screw" and the quantities are all shown as one.

As John P. has stated above, there are three screws securing the top flange of the tunnel to weldnuts on the bulkhead. My tunnel has a hole in the flange next to the stamped relief for the high starter. Should there be a weld nut on the tunnel at that location for floorboard attachment?

G Goeppner

Yes, the cable is fixed to the end of a longer floorboard screw with an additional washer and nut.

There are three screw holes at the top of the gearbox cover but only the center screw does not go through the plywood thickness and therefore is shorter. The others would be the normal 1" length except low starter cars which would have a 1 1/4" in the RH one to fix the cable clip.
John DeWolf

Mr. Goeppner,
I went out and looked at mine- it's a '57 1500 coupe- there is no weld nut in that position, there is just a long screw, a clamp, lock washer and nut. I guess they figured why put a nut there, when there is going to be something attached to it.
