MG MGA - Flywheel ring gear orientation?
The previous owner of this engine (18G 3 bearing)seems to have installed the ring gear with the wrong side to the rear. The MGA/B starter engages from the rear but this one was installed with the factory trims of the teeth to the front. The rear shows the ware from the collision of the MG starter rear entry. Image is attached Am I correct in the thinking that the gear is wrong or is it the way it is supposed to be? I replaced the ring gear on my 1500 engine with the machined reliefs to the rear. What is your opinion of the situation, is it worth replacing the ring gear, if it is wrong? Or just live with it? (It is a lightened MGB flywheel.) The engine is a 1800 I am rebuilding for eventual placement in my 59 1500 MGA. In the meantime I am driving and enjoying my 1500. PS: The DPO had several things that were done in his previous "rebuild" including a loose wrist pin bolt and ending up damaging the cylinder wall. Thanks Jim |

Jim, It is possible that the PO used a MGB starter. The tooth relief for the starter should be to the rear for an MGA type starter. It is very easy to change the gear around to be correct. Have a good day! John |

I am not sure that changing the flywheel ring gear is all that simple. It is many years since I changed one on an MGA but I have done many on Triumph cars. I have attached the method as per the MGA Workshop Manual, which is the same as on most cars. Mick |
