MG MGA - 'F'og light Switch

I am at the point of reassembling the Dash and installing all the switches. I presume the switch with the "F" is for Driving/fog lights. Since many of the cars I notice do not have this option, is the switch basically useless?

Bill

Correct, it is for the fog light(s). For a number of years before I fitted foglights I used it for my electric windscreen washer pump - 'F' for fluid!

As always, Many thanks!!!

I haev also seen it used as a basic anti-theft device. Some people wire the fuel pump to it. MGA won't get very far after the carb bowls are empty. "F" for fuel...

I hooked it up for four-way hazzard flashers, so "F" is for Flashers.

Obviously we need a few more switches. It would seem typically British (at least interesting) to line up four switches in a row all marked "F" for Fog, Fluid, Fuel, and Flashers. The confusion alone could be an effective anti-theft function.

Don't get me going on labelling.

In my military days I spent a couple of years involved with pilot checklists and emergency procedures. On one occasion I spent 4 hours having a trinational discussion (Brits, Germans and Italians) on whether you press or push a button.

The German spokesman came up with the agreed solution: you push a vertically mounted button and press a horizontally mounted button.

Unfortunately, the horizontally mounted button in question was labelled 'Push'.

A 5th "F" labeled switch would be for the Nitrous bottle. The F would be for "F"aster. The 6th "F" switch would be for the "F"ire Extinguisher.
Chuck Schaefer

The "F" is for fan. Turns on the electric radiator cooling fans.
R J Brown

"F" is for flatulence. Whenever I feel windy I pull the "f" switch. Keeps the passengers guessing.
David Holmes

Barney, Great idea for the hazard flashers --- have you any details of how to wire this up ?

I'm feeling deprived. I don't have an "f" switch. I have S C L W P + a plunger which I "push" for the washers. Is that where my "f" should be?

Yes, you could well wonder where the F*** your F knob has gone!!

Assuming you are right hand drive, to the left of the ignition switch you should have the W wiper knob. To the right of the speaker mesh you should have, from left to right, L for lights, F for fog, (fluid, faster, 4-way flasher, f***, et al) and P for panel light.

The alternate place for your fluid plunger switch is the after market drilled position to the 7-o-clock position of the fuel gauge, almost directly below the W knob.

A picture is worth a thousand words:

The F Knob is shown 1-o-clock to the dual oil pressure/water temp gauge. The push windscreen washer knob is the white knob just to the left of the heater controls.

Steve,
The German must have been really confused when he walked into a hotel - the first door said "push", the next door said "pull", and the third door said "lift"!

Another alternative is that you fit a reverse light and wire it to the F switch (difficult to get an automatic switch on the gearbox). The F can then be Forwards when pushed in and Reverse when pulled!!

If not wired at all then it is the Frustration switch, to be pulled when sitting in a traffic jam or lost on a rally etc.. No solution guarenteed but it makes you feel better.

Steve. Thanks for clarifying. A previous owner has put my washer plunger where my "F" knob should be. Perhaps I should inscribe it with an "F" just for completeness!

I think the "proper" place for the washer plunger to the left of the heater controls might be an improvement though. I rarely use my washers because one of two things usually happens. 1 the water comes over the top of the screen into my face... or 2 The pipe pops off the back of the plunger unit and dumps the water on my knee! At least if it were on the other side it would dump it on the passenger.

As much as I like the look of the after market pump, I did not fancy drilling the dashboard.

Instead I fitted an electrical pump with a hidden switch under the dash. In fact I mounted the switch on a wooden accesory plate that is also home to my mobile phone/torch/satnav charging socket.

An earlier bit of lateral thinking met with some success. I mounted a pull/twist/pull (lights) switch in place of the W wiper switch. The first pull put the wipers on, the twist and pull additionally worked the fluid pump. However, the modern switch was poorly made and the washers kept firing intermittently, on one notable occasion giving the passenger a good soaking as he got in!

How do I get at the back of the F switch to attach a different wire to it? Do I have to stick my head upside down under the steering wheel. Or may be I can find the original fog lamp wire and connect it, for instance to a fan?
H L Davy

You have a number of options. You can easily remove the switch without sticking your head under the dash and then attach the wires and re-install. You can drop the dash slightly to work from the top to attach the wires, but that does involve some head under dash work, so no big advantage. Or you can lie on your back on the seat frame with your feet in the air like a stranded beetle. I suspect most of us have spent too long in that position already!

I would go for the removing the switch option! Just release the knob and remove the chrome bezel (well worth having that tool!) The switch can be removed by reaching behind the dash if it didn't already fall off onto the driver's floor.
