MG MGA - Found a couple of HP
Carbies on my roadster need overhaul as throttle shafts are worn (annoying idle vaiations from 850 to 1500 rpm). Found a couple of other issues when I got them on the bench. The back plate for the K&N tapered air filters had not been installed concentric with carburetor throat (see photo) also mixture control was out of adjustment, while throttle increase was fine, the front carburetor main jet was coming down well in advance of the rear main jet (not a major problem as had no problem starting).
The advantage of removing the carbies, heat shield, inlet manifold and air cleaners as an assembly means you can easily see these problems and correct while on the bench. Mike |

Nice little find there Mike--So was that a faulty manufacturing issue or just bolted up incorrectly. Nice engine bay-the torx nuts holding the thermostat housing are a nice addition right in the front making it look a bit special/custom right from first glance Cheers willy |

Assembly error, not sure if mine or previous owners mechanic. I cannot remember having them off before, even though I have had the carbies off as an assembly to replace jet seals. There is enough clearance in carby flange holes to align correctly. I can understand how it happened if air filter housing where fitted to carbies while in the car, gravity would take over! That is an old photo of the engine bay, now has an alloy 5-port head. Mike |

Pretty similar design to the stub stacks I designed and built all those years ago. These ones of course fit the standard MGA filter canisters. The design was rolling road tested and gave a 5HP increase on an MGA with a 3-bearing 1800 engine. i.e. 88.02hp to 93.31HP at 4600RPM. They do make a difference. Mike. Your design does not seem to allow for the air holes to the top of the piston housing? What is the central hole of the three? Steve |

Hi Steve, These have been around in Oz for years, prior to your design. They are called HP Performance after the guy who design and distributed them. The two holes at 9 and 3 o’clock are angled up in the casting to meet the vent holes in the carburetor flange. The central hole is threaded to take the central fixing allen head cap screw to secure the alloy cap that seals the K&N tapered filter element. Mike |

Mike Slightly confused still. How does that plate attach to the SU body? Steve |

Steve These filter housings have two blind tapped holes on the back for fixing to the carburetor. These are diecast alloy housing. See photos. Mike |

Thanks Mike. All clear now! Steve |

Mike, are these HP filter bases available now?..can't seem to find any reference to them. |
