MG MGA - front bumpers
hi on a change of subject i notice from a lot of the photos that you all post that your front bumpers are probably moss replacements as they have a very flat profile as indeed mine had, i replaced mine with a set from anglo parts in the netherlands which have the correct more rounded profile and much higher quality chrome as it is done in europe as opposed to asia i believe

In the late 80's and early 90's Moss front bumpers had the incorrect flat face and sharp corners. By the time I bought a replacement in April 1988 the stamping was changed, and the Moss front bumpers now have the correct profile. |

Barney, I thought that the current view on moss front bumpers was that they were the wrong profile and poorly chromed. I have soon to decide whether or not to pay £250-£275 to rechrome my origibal bumpers but if the moss bumpers are good then this might change things. Does having the correct profile also extent to good chrome and appearance etc? |

This one is now 10 years old with 85,000 miles and the chrome is hanging in there quite well. I'm happy with it for may daily driver car. What I can't say is how current new issue bumpers compare to those made 10 years ago. |

Hi J H I was told by an ex moss employee to get any chrome pieces from anglo parts because although the current moss front bumper is now correct in profile, the chrome is much poorer being done in china etc whereas anglo parts have it done in europe to a much higher standard and they are almost the same price, I have recently fitted one of the new version 2 front grilles and whilst it is superb in fit and shape etc the chrome is very poor with lots of tram lines showing through from poor preparation so it will be coming off the winter to be rechromed locally gordon |

Did he stop working for Moss Gordon and then start working for anglo parts? :-) I found it very interesting a year ago when someone like Gordon was suggesting the same. We both went to MGCC Silverstone and we inspected everyone of a line of about 50 MGAs. I asked him "please tell me whih are original rechrome and which are repro"? It came as no surprise to me or I would expect anyone else that we could not make a determination. Having said that that was a matter of the profile but the chrome durability is another thing. I bought some midget bumpers a good few years ago that had been made to a PRICE rather than to a QUALITY, they rusted very quickly. If I want chroming today I will always have my own parts chromed (whether they are original or repro) simply to make sure the job is done to a quality not a price! |

Hi Bob as far as I know he wasn't working for anyone at the time, it was the profile of the early moss front bumper that was quite different to the original and easy to spot all covered on Barney's site and it does affect the way the overiders fit, funny because their rear bumpers were ok gordon |

Not a problem Gordon, I will wait for you at MGCC silverstone at the MGA register parking and you can then point them out to me. My mate and I were unsuccessful but time will tell. :-)) |

HI bob if you look at the original MGA book I think there is a good photo of both in there which shows the difference gordon |

I think the bumpers from Scarborough Faire are correct. And if you want to prevent rusting from the inside out, I suggest painting them on the inner side with POR-15 (epoxy paint), in silver. The color is an almost exact match for the inner coating, and will not rust. I did this over 10 years ago, drive my MGA coupe in the rain, and the bumpers are as new. Ira |
