MG MGA - Front drum brake cylinder kits
I recently had to rebuild one of my front drum brake cylinders due to a leak. Mine are the aftermarket brake cylinders that came with my ’59 roadster in 2005. Thanks to Jim Ferguson who figured out that rebuild kits are available from Scarborough Faire, part number M63R, $6.15 per cylinder. I thought it would be worth noting that the new rebuild kits are slightly different than the seals that came out of the brake cylinder on the car. The internal lip seals appear to be identical, but the external dust seals are different. The upper left attached picture shows the old (left) and new (right) seals. The old style o-ring fits over the outside of the brake cylinder and seals to the cap when at rest (top right pic). The new style is a smaller diameter and fits over the piston under the cap (lower left picture). At rest the o-ring mates with an internal chamfer on the brake cylinder (lower right pic). My take is that the new style provides a better seal than the old style. The construction of the piston cap results in some small gaps where it attaches to the piston (center picture). The old style o-ring does not seal off these gaps, the new style o-ring does. In the end the difference in the dust seals probably will not make a huge difference, but it might be worth noting another variation in the rebuild kits. John |
