MG MGA - Front End Engine Noise
My 1960 1600 has developed a relatively loud knocking coming from the front end of the engine; It dosn't start until the engine is warm; It sounds similar to the noise made when water pump bearings are going bad; It's not the water pump; There is no loss of compression & the sound slightly deminishes with acceleration; I'm concerned it may be the bearings; Any thoughts? Barrett, A quick thought might be your timing chain tensioner is warn out. Accelerating may be enough to give a slight tension on the chain, keeping it in line. As you lessen up in the throttle, it has a chance to slack off a bit and hit the front timing cover or bounce against the tensioner. Ray |
