MG MGA - Front Tansmission shims

I just replaced my leaking oil seal from the front of my transmission. After removing the cover behind the clutch fork, 2 shims fell out from around the seal. Are these to prevent the shaft from going in and out? Does any one have the tolerance spec? I did not see anything on Barney’s site pertaining to this.
Thanks, Bill
Bill Robinson

The shims are to keep the bearing seated in the case. You should find it in the workshop manual, I don't have mine handy right now.

Thanks John, I guess my next question would be is how do you determine there are enough shims to put preasure on the bearing? When the cove is slid back on to secure the shims, there will be no access to calculate the tolerence.
Bill Robinson

I ond't have acess at this time to my worshop manual but the procedure is in it. The same procedure is used for an MGB. It is more or less a selective fit where you shim until the cover won't seat against the gasket and then remove a shim.

It is on MGAguru.com. The search function works well. Search for "shims" +"gearbox".

See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/gearbox/gt203d.htm
Look 2/3 down the page for paragraph starting "Install the front cover with bearing shims".

I need to replace the shims too. Is there a simple way to tighten the nut? Since it has the lock washer how tight does it need to be. Mine was pretty loose when I took it apart.
John Cline

Tight. It's better to use threadlock than the lockwasher too.
