MG MGA - Front Wheel Bearing Play
Struggling with the annual servicing. Back killed me after struggling under the car to remove the oil filter. Now on to other things.
Very slight 12 - 6 O'clock play on both front wheels. Disc brakes with WW. Checked to see if it was worn spline shaft play with the wheels. They are fine. The play is very, very slight in the bearings. With the wheels on I was getting 10 thou movement on the rim with my runout gauge. With the wheels off and spinner screwed back on I could just feel very slight movement but could not get it to register on my gauge (probably could not get enough leverage). All my steering and suspension joints are in good fettle and tight. Any thoughts? Steve |

There will always be a little play in the ball bearings. It doesn't sound excessive to me. If you want to reduce play to its minimum level, you can convert to tapered bearings. |

Steve Following your comment I went across to Barney's site for a read. Think I will stay with the standard ball bearing fit. Many thanks for your opinion. Steve |

Steve, I found the standard tolerance too slack. So I changed to one grade tighter. Forget what code it was. |

Sorry Art, I don't understand what you are saying. What tolerance and code? Steve |

Steve Ball bearings come with various clearances. If I remember correctly SKF standard bearings were nominated as C3 clearance and could get C1-5 depending on application, operating ambient temp etc. obviously going away from standard clearances cost more due to lower production numbers Mike |

Thanks Mike. Jogged my memory |
