MG MGA - Front Wheel Cylinders
Hi all, In preparation for my upcoming safety inspection, I noticed that my front wheel cylinders are seeping. All 4 of them. I rebuilt them last year and they seemed ok but the DPO could have overbored them or whatever. Time to just replace them. I have seen on Ebay a set regularly going for $65 plus shipping. This seems kind of low to me. My guess is that they are aftermarket. Fine with me as long as they are of similar quality. Any thoughts? I could just go ahead and put the 1600 front links (and related parts) on the car and have disc brakes, but I've kinda gotten used to the drums and I like them. |

Tommy, There was a time that the OEM style cylinders were not available. Some of the suppliers sold an alternative which was fit-form-function but took a different rebuild kit as the seals were of a different design. Supposedly the rebuild kits were available from a select few suppliers. I have those on my car and have been OK with them for 6 years now. I do not know the current status but the alternatives have worked well for me. $65 sounds a bit low but not too much. Watch the shipping fees! Chuck |

According to Bob West the seal kits on teh market are more trouble than they are worth and he strongly advises against them. Given that new cylinders are relatively cheap (even not from ebay) I'd go for new ones of known provenance. They are the same as Morris Minor ones if those are available locally for you! |
