MG MGA - Fuel consumption - beat this!
The MGCC (Victoria) had their annual economy run last weekend. It was run over 87.3 miles of undulating country to the east of Melbourne including a climb section up to Toolangi. There where (21) B series engined cars (MGAs and MGBs of various capacities and tuning). The average miles per gallon (imperial gallons) achieved was 48.26 mpg. The winning car (MGB GT) returned 83.14 mpg! The best MGA bodied car returned 55.96 mpg. All the usual techniques (and some) were employed to get these results including 65 psi tyre pressures, coasting where possible in angel gear (estimate around 20-25 miles), etc. (Tanks were sealed following the initial filling). Mike Lots of down hill as you say to get figures like that. I started recording my MPG to 2 decimal places on 28 March 2006. I am averaging 24.18 miles per imperial gallon. However, worth noting what you say about various capacities and tuning; add to that maintenance. My issue for the last 12 years has been a fuel pump pushing out too high a pressure, with ramifications down the line with the richness of the fuel mixture - now sorted. My Father-in-law was a great one for coasting down hills to save petrol. In fact he used to switch off the ignition. He almost had his comeuppance in his new Jaguar in the early 60s. He forgot it had power steering and servo assisted brakes. It was quite a steep hill and he only just got the engine fired up in time! Steve |

Steve Start and finish points were roughly the same AHD (height above sea level) so ups and downs even out. Yes, many competitors do turn the ignition off when coasting down hill - you need to be mindful you have no brake lights. Also you don't want to be caught behind the serious competitors who run at no more than 1500 rpm all trip! Interestingly a V8 BGT was second outright with around 80 mpg - GT aerodynamics must be good! Mike |

And there's the MG Workshops proprietor who in the 70's ran a standard MGB from Melbourne to Sydney and back to Albury on a single tank of petrol - the plan was a return trip but the transport trucks got in the way. That's a distance of over 1400 km. I think the figures you quote can be bettered substantially.. |
