MG MGA - Fuel Gauge Problem

Hi BBS Members,
I am sure this problem is covered in the archives, and in Barney's site, but I could not readily find the answer so am appealing to you. When I went for a drive this evening, my fuel gauge showed a little over 1/2 full, which agreed with my memory. After driving no more than 15 miles or so I stopped and when restarting the gauge pegged over to empty and stayed there. I am sure the tank is half full - can you give me some advice as to where to start looking? I can't recall whether this is a symptom of broken wire or short circuit, or worse - the sender unit.
Thanks.
Tom

Sender unit or signal wire shorted to ground will drive the gauge to "E". Broken wire inside the gauge for the right side coil will drive the needle to "E". Loss of power input (blown fuse) will leave the needle resting against the peg (past "E").

Thanks Barney - I will start looking. The needle is on the peg, past E so I'll look first for loss of power input.

Barney you were right (again) - it was a blown fuse. Replaced it and all seems well, but I wonder why it went in the first place. I note it was a 20A buss fuse - likely not slow-blow. I replace with a similar 15A fuse that I happened to have. Will try to track down the correct fuses next. Thanks for your help.

Check if the cotter pin on the clutch pedal connecting to rod going to the master cylinder is touching the hot lead to the wiper motor when you push in the clutch. Mine did. Twice over several years.

It was easier to figure out the second time that I needed to re-bend the pin for a tighter fit.
