MG MGA - Fuel line fittings

At some of the fuel line connections, there is a metal seat. A piece with an end matching the seat is held to it with a nut. The hose attaches to the other end of that piece on a barbed end. So it seems that this metal on metal compression junction is intended to keep fuel from leaking. I never gave this much thought, except for now that mine is failing to accomplish this task. Has anyone tried dressing this fitting in some way to improve the seal? Perhaps a spin with some valve lapping compound? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Steve - I have made up up a tool for lapping the inside taper surface in the fittings on the fuel pumps, but the problem is mostly the exterior taper of the fitting on the hose. They often become groved and then loose their ability to seal properly. I have dressed those tapers by chucking them in a drill press and using a flie held at the original angle (as close as one can free hand) and bring the file to bear on the taper until the taper is filed out of the fitting. If that fails, you should be able to get one of the fittings with a barb hose fitting ont he other end from Moss Motors. If you can't find one, contact me via e-mail and I may have one on hand that I can part with. Good luck - Dave

At first glance, the inside taper looks worse in my particular case. Is the tool you use a trade secret? Also, I assume you meant to say "bring the file to bear on the taper until the GROOVE is filed out of the fitting?" And what do you think of my idea of giving the fitting a spin in the seat with some valve lapping compound? I'm thinking that should make them fit together really well.

Steve - The tool that I made was a cut off taper from an old fitting, tapped for a 1/4-20 Phillips head screw. The screw is treaded into the taper until the head is flush with the back of the taper and the screw body protruding about 1/2". To use, a bit of fine lapping compound is smeared on the taper and it is inserted into the fitting on the pump. Use a drill with a phillips bit in it and spin the taper, renewing the lapping compound as often as necessary to clean up the internal taper. Good luck - Dave

David, thanks for the assistance. I will attempt something like that. Also, thank you for the kind offer of a fitting from your stock. I don't see the part in the Moss catalog, but that doesn't mean they don't have it. Joe Curto is also not too far from me, and he has just about everything SU. If all else fails, I will get back to you regarding your kind offer.
