MG MGA - Fuel pump bits
This might belong on the MGB board as my fuel pump is an MGB type. I bought a repair kit from Burlen. In it there are 5 plastic things called armature guides. They each have 2 holes in them. They were not part of what I disassembled and I can't see where they go. Any help? As far as I can see, the diaphragm itself guides the armature radially. |

Art, as I recall, there should be a number of brass rollers that guide the armature in the SU pump fitted to the MGA. How that compares with the MGB pump I don't know, but maybe those plastic things replace the brass rollers; see item 10 in the attached picture.

Lindsay, I think they do replace the brass ones, but I don't see how they are fixed in place or arranged. The instructions are quite bleak! And I did not have any when dismantling. I think the pumps are the same above the diaphragm split. |

Just found the old part that does the same thing. see pic. I think I prefer the old, easier to install. |

Art - Those 5 figure 8s take the place of the original single piece with 4 lobes on it. The old style armature guides wore rather quickly (so did the brass disks on the earlier pumps) allowing the ridge on the diaphragm armature to rub on the coil core, causing unstable operation of the pump. The figure 8s are a bit tough to get last 2 into place and require that you work the diaphragm up and down to get them to go in. Be sure the diaphragm is adjusted correctly before installing the figure 8s (I use an old single piece unit to adjust the diaphragm before installing them) as it is almost impossible to rotate the diaphragm with them in place and could possibly cause a leak in the diaphragm if you pull hard enough to rotate it. Cheers - Dave PS - Those figure 8s are used on all of the pump models anymore. |
