MG MGA - Fuel Pump contacts buzz after click
I noticed yesterday that when I turned on the ignition the fuel pump was buzzing for 1/2 a second after the usual clicks. It pumped up fine and I drove about 150 miles in the mountains without any problem. It did it again today so I decided it was the points contaminated or something. Once pumped up (usually 3-4 clicks) it holds the pressure for most of the day when sitting. When I started to test the pump later today I couldn't get it to do it again. Everything was normal so I decided to delay pulling it apart until later. It is a Moss original type pump with mechanical points. It has given 5000 miles of flawless service since the car has been on the road. Is this an early indication of point failure or something else? Maybe I just need to clean the points. Thanks for your comments. Jim |

Jim - It sounds like your points may be in need of cleaning. The points will film over if the car is not driven on a regular basis and even if most of the film is burned off, it will still collect and cause problems after a period of time. Remove the end cover and try dragging some 400 grit sandpaper between the points and see if that cures the problem. See my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ for more information on the fuel pumps. Cheers - Dave |
