MG MGA - Fuses

MGAs were built with just two fuses and much of the electrics is not protected by fuses.
Of course the cars have been around for quite a while without too much of a problem.
Would you recommend adding fuses for protection?

I must admit that since having a moderate smouldering on a mini, I've become a touch obsessive about fusing unprotected circuits.

The standard Lighting circuit on the MGA is not fused, I added a fuse to this circuit after I had a short circuit in one of the front sidelights.

It was a dead short and even though I got into the car very quickly to switch off the battery isolator, unfortunately by the time I did this, the front loom had melted along its full length up until the fuse box area. Quite an expensive mistake for me :-(

It was probably lucky that I had an isolator switch fitted as it would have taken me many more minutes to disconnect the battery lead and Im sure that I prevented a real fire in the engine bay.

The Lucas SF4 fusebox uses the same mounting holes as the SF6 that is the standard MGA fuse block. Offering four glass fuses and screw mountings it was an easy upgrade. I now have fused lights and auxiliaries.

SF4 considerably cheaper here

There was a very helpful posting by Lindsay Sampford a while ago, entitled "Extra fuses re-think and re-work".
It includes a wiring diagram etc and can be installed with very little disturbance.

Personally, I would be unhappy not having everything fused, so I installed with thanks to Lindsay.

I have fused pretty much every circuit on my car but each item was fused individually as I fitted it.
New lighting loom.
Two-speed wipers.
headlamp dipper/ flasher relay.
Twin electric fans.
Wiper delay unit.

As soon as I stop adding electrical stuff to the car I will fit Sampford fuse box to make a nicer job of it.
I think with so much extra stuff fitted I will need a busbar to connect everything to, rather than through the ignition switch.

I put a buss bar in my Coupe. headlight relays, fog light relay, cigarette lighter for cell phone power/charging, an extra wire coming from the alternator. All of there connectors would not fit on the stud on the starter switch.
