MG MGA - G/box oil
My early A shifts ok when it heats up, 10ks. when cold very nochy, especially 3-2. Anyone tried 15 grade Ford Auto Trans oil ? The Ford oil is blended to enhanse the friction coefficient of the clutch packs. Some early fords and Borg Warner 8s had brass clutch plates instead of fibre. So the brass syncros should like it. I presume you are using ordinary engine type oil in your gearbox Sean? I'll repeat what I have said before on here. My car's previous owner put hypoid oil in the gearbox and the synchro 3rd to 2nd didn't work AT ALL when we got it. I changed the oil to ordinary 10/40 and it got slightly better. A couple of hundred miles later I did another gearbox oil change, as it still had a slight "hypoid whiff", and from then on, the gearbox got better and better. Today, several thousand miles later, the gearbox is perfect. It is quiet and slick, and all the synchro works. I have done nothing mechanical to the gearbox, it just got better by itself once I had changed the oil! |
