MG MGA - Gear lever problem

I have fitted an MGB 1950cc 18V engine and four synchro overdrive gearbox to my MGA race car and I have found that when I trial fitted the dashboard the base of the dash is very close to the top of the gearlever. The gearlever is the type that has the overdrive switch built into the top of the gear knob.

My initial reaction is to shorten & bend the gearlever
but before I do this I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and what alternatives there might be eg. an alternative gear level that would fit. The overdrive switch could be fitted in an alternative position if necessary.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Maurice.

I just do what you intend - heat and bend. The shifter location is further forward on the MGB than in the MGA. Removing the heater control panel reduces barked knuckles if you leave the lever alone.

There is no alternative I know of. Bending the lever in a shallow 'S' shape brings it back enough and lowers it a bit. With some sheet metal skills you'll be able to reconfigure the top of the tunnel so you'd never know it isn't stock.

Don't forget to lift off momentarily when shifting into OD if you want it to last.....
