MG MGA - gearbox question
Hi all, The body of my 1600 is painted, chassis is painted and on his wheels so it is time to start on the mechanical parts. The gearbox that came with the car has a high starter position,a 23 spline input shaft, flanged output shaft but no strengthening ribs on the outside of the bellhousing. So the 23 splines are like the 1600-MK II box but there are no ribs on top of the box. The original color was I think green. There was no gearbox number stamped near the oil dipstick but on the left side if the box.Number 1Y5940. Can anyone help me to identify the box?Was it an MGA box or from another BMC car? The engine that was sitting in the car was a Wolseley 1622(seemed to be a common swap those days) Thanks for the help. Regards, Herman |

If it has the untapped boss on top of the bell housing it may be the twin cam box that was also used on many MkII cars. |

Herman, if you mean the gearbox was green, it could be off one of the other BMC cars that used the early B series engine, such as a Riley. I saw one at Beaulieu last year, it was green and was off a Riley. I think unless you're going for originality, if the gearbox fits and works then go for it. Good luck, Grant :-) |

As far as I know all 1600's had aibbed case box with the coarse spline input shaft. |
