MG MGA - Gearbox Rebuild
Ive gone and dismantled most of my gearbox getting ready for a rebuild. Before I take the mainshaft apart i am trying to measure the endfloat between the second and third gears. There is quite a bit of movement possible between the two. If i slide the second gear as far back towards the exit side of the shaft and the third gear as far forward (in the opposite direction of 2nd gear) as possible there is a gap of around .021". Is this the correct way to measure the endfloat between the two? |

RSK, I measured three old trannys that I have and I got measurements of .010", .019", and .021". I don't know of any other way to measure the end float. Hope this helps. Have a good day! John |

Does anyone know if these are acceptable clearances? I plan on installing new busings for both 2nd and 3rd gears and i have purchased a new thrust washer however it only comes in the original size of .157". I'm not sure if its even possible to correct the spacing. |

Hi RSK. According to my old autopress MGA/MGB manual by Kenneth Ball, the 2nd and 3rd gear endfloat needs to be between .004 & .006 inches. If endfloat is incorrect shims are available in various thicknesses to take up the "slop". Shims were apparently originally available in .1565 to .1575, .1585 to .1595, and .1605 to .1615 inch thicknesses. I Dont know about the availability of these shims today. You may have to make some out of shim stock material, if unavailable. Hope this helps. Glenn |
