MG MGA - Gearbox stud
My gearbox (1600) has two studs (vs bolts) holding the rear housing to the front. The stud at the top is logical because you cannot feed in a bolt, but the other one has no such restriction. Why are there two? |

Is it to prevent tearing the threads out of the gearbox casing? The stud is a semi-permanent fixture in the gearbox casing, to remove the rear housing simply involves the removal of the nut on the stud, thus saving wear and tear on the casing threads (which are usually coarse). My theory anyway! |

Early in production there was only one stud, and the factory changed it to two. I suppose it's easier to install a paper gasket with two studs to hold it in alignment, and maybe also easier to align the rear housing during installation. |
